Hi...I have been somewhat intimidated by the new camera, but I finally tried to take some rock pictures. I still have stuff to get worked out. Anyhow, the first two here are pictures of rocks that all came from a larger chunk that I busted up. Found it at a local construction site, and it just LOOKED like a chunk of wood off the side of a tree trunk. All the veining, the texture of bark, etc. It was obvious it has soft spots, which people on the board have mentioned. But the weird part is that it is all made up of this kind of granular crystalline stuff -- mostly gold color, like a quartzy rock -- but all very crumbly. I tumbled it forever and lost a lot of volume. It rounded quickly but I kept trying to grind out the soft parts and gave up. The largest piece is the one that most shows the wood grain look. Of course, they are all much lighter when dry because of the soft parts and don't show their features as well. Opinions wanted -- I assumed this was wood, but I've never heard of one with a crytalline make up like this. This final one is another piece I had that I thought might be wood, opinions appreciated! Thanks for looking!

Hey Pup, I'm not sure what you have there, it might be petrified wood or it might not be. But just from my own experience collecting and deciding what is and is not pet.wood, I'm afraid I would put all of the above pics into the "NOT petrified wood" category. Just my opinion.

HIYA Pup...good to see you back on the boards. Do you have any before pictures? I am not convinced that is petrified wood but it is hard to tell by the pictures. It could very well be some low grade pet wood.

I don't think it's pet wood pup. Looks a lot like some of the granite we have over here.

Cool pics Puppie but I'm sorry, don't know what to tell you as to whether or not it's pet wood.

Darn, I don't believe I took any before pictures! It was a sort of dark brown/blackish rock, but it drew attention once you saw that it was made up of crystal stuff. I've never seen anything that looked so much like a piece of old wood lying around rotting. When I busted it up, it split along the grain as you would expect. The surprise is the way it is structured, the way the veins or layers are sort of crackled into all this stuff. Once tumbled, with so much white, it doesn't look woody the way it did. Maybe I should wet it down and take another photo. If there's sun tomorrow I'll try it. I also should take a couple photos of rock with circular rings, I've got a few. thanks, pup

I have about 2 tons of petrified wood and this does not look anything close to mine...even after being tumbled...I am not sure what this stuff is, but I sure don't think it's pet wood. But I am going only by the pics...

Hi Puppie , sorry , no , not petwood here . I too think more alike with Alice in that it is granite and the last one a quartz. I went looking for wood in a local river a few days ago and found some nice pieces. There are always the obvious pieces and then there are the aretheyaretheynot pieces which keep us guessing.
Hope you will find some soon though.

Only thing you got going there is the banding! But sorry to say it does not act like wood- Perhaps it is Pet wood with Calcite replacement?
