I went out to a place west of Los Lunas NM on state hwy 6. At the top of the first hill, I saw some interesting looking lava hills and outcrops North of the road. I tried to get through any gates all along the North roadside fencing. No such luck: all gates are padlocked all the way to the Rio Puerco. These are tribal lands: Isleta, Navajo, and Laguna and they are all off-limits. So, I ended up exploring two dry washes going under the highway. I found mostly jasper in reds, yellows, browns and purples. Also, some agate, quartz and a few pieces of wood. I also found a strange rock having a conglomerate-like makeup, with angular inclusions. The brownish inclusion part is glassy, quartzy and the white matrix parts are orthoclase I believe. It got too hot for my 2 black dogs so we quit after about an hour. ed

Looks like you had a good day. The jasper will be really nice polished up but the red should be stunning. Nice pet wood too. Dang, I need to quit mowing lawn and go rock hunting!

Hey tinman... yeah, I'll trade these. ;D There aren't too many purple ones tho; at best about 6-7 can be called purple and it would be dark purple, more like maroon. What do you have to offer? ed

Oh man, I LOVE purple! And only have a few purple rocks! I want some more, but don't have anything to trade and have put myself on a "no more buying rocks" budget for a while! BooHOO! I want some! Maybe in the fall when it's cooler and you can go 'hounding without you and the dogs having heat stroke, you can find some more and I can buy some from you.

llana, exactly... my thoughts as well.. I will wait and go back some nice crisp day in the fall or early spring and work those dry washes for a three four hours and come up with alot more purple "new potatoes" and more wood too. And take a rake next time to move the sand around and reveal the hidden treasures. The dogs will enjoy that alot too. I haven't tried selling anything yet, tho. I just decided to try a trade or two. At this point, I sure have alot more rough than I have tumblers to process it all. ed
