No idea on the green, but that purple has to be amethyst, doesn't it? I can't think of anything that has that shade of purple. Maybe someone else knows another purple rock like that? Do you have amethyst where you are? Looks like it should polish up nicely.

Here's a pic (dry) of some dark amethyst rough ... I think it looks a lot like the purple colour in your close-up pics. Some of the rough in my pic has an orangy iron oxide stain on the exterior that looks quite a bit like the orange part on your super close-up. So I vote for amethyst.

That sure looks like amethyst to me. I have some amethyst too that has some reddish stuff in it, then I have some that looks like it's got gold floating in it too. *smile* Those are just great Pup, thanks for taking the extra time to post them.

I have to agree with rollingstone with the amethyst.
The only other material I can think of that would have the same color and is fairly common is fluorite and fluorite is much softer then amethyst.

Interesting. I first found a couple of loose crystals on the path that looked like amethyst. I was really excited of course. Then as I picked up more rocks I started finding green rocks with inclusions that were purple and more of the green glassy stuff. The thing is, with the way it crusts on top of green rocks or occurs in inclusions that are NOT crystals, makes it not look like amethyst to me. It seems like we've got this green to purple color range hence fluorite. I don't know, if I knew I wouldn't have asked!

It seems like we've got this green to purple color range hence fluorite. I don't know, if I knew I wouldn't have asked! Should be really easy to tell -- fluorite is only mohs 4 and amethyst is mohs 7, so amethyst can scratch glass (mohs 5.5) but fluorite cannot. (Or conversely, glass will scratch fluorite but not amethyst.)

Yeah, RS, I was thinking about trying a scratch test, but I am not confident enough to trust my judgment of results. Those first couple loose crystals I picked up look the most like amethyst, but the other purple, I just don't know, the texture doesn't feel quite right. There is supposed to be amethyst in this state, certainly we have a ton of quartzy rocks, but a lengthy list of minerals (what this site is mainly known for) and rocks didn't have amethyst on it. What about orthoclase for some of them? People have been talking about it lately. There's also a bunch of milky white with jade green inclusions running through it, which is just turning up now as I'm busting it up and sticking it in the vibes. Bob, I believe I picked up some green rocks like this in the west, too. I've got several seemingly distinct types here that all are green. In the west I was thinking maybe olivine? I have a really bright green piece I picked up along the Platte near Cody WY.

RS, comparing with your photos of the amethyst rough, and I have tumbled amethyst too and have some rough around here, it is much more crystalline, sharp edges, shiny. The rocks in the photo are wet and really do look much duller dry and no shine at this point. I've got it tumbling all over the place, a vibe load and a couple of 3-lb barrels too, one of them is due to wash out tomorrow. This stuff is really fun to watch.

The purple doesn't look crystaline enough to be amethyst, don't know what the green is. Other than that they are beautiful. Tami
