Stoner is AWESOME. I was gifted some really cool stuff a while back. Some of you may remember my post about how cool rockers are/were and so generous. Well, I was given some dinosaur bones from a private collection, with no tools to work them properly. Stoner agreed to work on them for me w/ his saw and flat lap. I wish I had taken before picts on the bones but I didn't DOH!!! Anyway, there were 3 specimens in question: 1- a small dino bone that had already been sliced and had even been outlined for the cab. The slab was no larger than a 50 cent piece. Stoner cut it out and polished it up. Here it is and it's marvelous: The second bone was slabbed and was much bigger. It would just perfectly fit in the palm of a man's hand. I don't think it is cab quality as there are a few cracks in it which doesn't matter to me, I'm gonna frame it or something. He put it on the lap and polished it up. Here it is: This 3rd rock I found in Central Utah and posted picts of it. I have no clue what it is but it's really neat. Almost looks like green marble or some kind of green jasper. It was pretty flat to begin w/ and Stoner did a great job flattening and shaping it. Here they are: Before Stoner: After Stoner: The picture pretty much sucks, but gives you an idear of what it looks like. I still need to polish it somehow. Here they are all together: Oh, here's a little something extra.....more dino bone. Unbelievable quality. It's the size of about 2 hockey pucks stacked on top of each other. It was already cut. It needs a little "polishie" on it, but it's still gorgeous. Close up: After looking at these rocks, you can probably guess why I was so impressed that some total stranger would give them to me and my family, and why a total stranger would work on them for me. Stoner: you are great and I hope you had fun working on these. They are really cool and mean a lot to me. I will be sending you a little somethin', somethin' via our friends at USPS for your time, sweat, blood, and tears. Also, feel free to elaborate on what you did to them(if you'd like). You are a good man Ed, thanks again. Gaetz

Man, Gaetz, that dino bone is beyond awesome!!
I was looking to buy some agatized dino bone for tumbling some months back, and did bid on some pieces on ebay, but in the end the price was just too far out of my league. Anything with nice cells was about $25 per pound even for rough that would have a fair bit of waste, and anything with red cells was up in the stratosphere. So here you are, GIVEN some amazing pieces with both nice cells and a strong red colour!! Wow, you did better than winning the lottery. You've got a real treasure there, thanks for the pics!
BTW, Utah seems to be the only place in the world where you get agatized dinosaur bone, so you are sitting in the heartland.

Kimmy- Well, that's a good question. I think I'm gonna frame the large dino slab. The cab will just remain in situ until I start to wrap, or whatever. The green guy I still need to polish and the pretty hunk of dino bone will just be fore gawking over. I just don't know what to do w/ it yet. I'll just save it and maybe someday I'll cut it. What would you do w/ it? ?? gaetz

Gaetz, Wow! Those are Sweet! I am always impressed with the generosity that is in most every rockhounders blood and spirit. Most of the enjoyment from this hobby does come from sharing your treasures, and I applaud all of you generous and giving people. Enjoy the rocks Gaetz. Hope you don't mind me adding one more dino pic... [http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y265/rockminer0/DCP_0405.jpg/img] Thanks, Steve

I feel like a complete idiot! I understand that I'm looking at dinosaur bones, but am I looking at the hollow part of the bone or the density of the bone itself. Sorry for being an idiot - I hope it's not hereditary!

correct me it I'm wrong- but you are looking at the marrow portion- kinda a cross section- presevered in stone!

Basically, it's no different that petrified wood. All features have just been preserved. Instead of marrow in the cells, it's now agate! It's really quite amazing that all colors of the rainbow show up in one piece. I'll try to get a better picture of it in the daylight sun.
Tweety, you're no idiot!!! It's still a confusing process to me to figure out how "stuff" (bone, tree bark, etc) is replaced (but still keeps it's shape) w/ silica and agate. Someone (I think it was Stefan) posted URL that talked about the petrified wood and the process involved.

KD-
Yeah, once you see dinosaur cells, it's not hard to ID them in the future. Good for you that you had them sitting around in the "misc" pile and now know what they are.
I don't think your white stuff is dino bone. Looks more like some kind of coral. The spots have a pattern to them and leads me think they could be tabulated coral or something like it.
Thanks for sharing and happy to hear you've got some dino of your own!!!!!
gaetz
can't wait to see what you do w/ them

Kd wear did that come from? That ain't local stuff- The white might be a coral but it seems a bit dense usually the corral is spaced apart a bit more- Could it be Fossilized Sponge? ?

i won a whole box of misc slabs in a recent eBay auction, it was jam packed with interesting stuff!! don't have a clue what a lot of it is, but it's all real pretty. it's almost like someone was selling off grandpa's stash and i just bid at the right time. the seller was rockhound_dog.
i was like a kid in a candy store unpacking it all! it was over 15 pounds and it came out to a little over 2 bucks a pound including shipping. hey, sometimes, you win!
