I found this odd rock sticking up out of a local creek's gravel bank. I initially I though it was a fossil sponge. It appears to be made of a limestone material. It doesn't look like any of the concrete I see in the area. I can't find anything like it in my fossil books or online. Do you think it's natural or man-made? The local area is cretaceous with Austin chalk and the Marl groups. Mosrly small marine fossils in the area and the occasional mosasaur. Could be a bryozoan.

Thank you for the reply. It does look like the Hallopora picture online. My friend suggested it might be slag of some kind too. The rock has a certain odd structure to it but it's very light like a pumice.

Can you see any uniform cell structure that would indicate an organic nature?

It does look organic but it could just be Tufa.

Hmmm there is structure to it like a cut sea sponge but I wouldn't call it uniform nor does it look like animal cells. Here's a close up of it.

Doesn't quit have the same structure as a fossil sponge... But it's not man made either...

Thanks for the link Pauls. It could very well be Tufa. There is both limestone and tan, grey and even black marble like material in the area. The fossils I find in the area are mostly shellfish like Gryphaea and Rudist corals. The not-sponge was so odd and immediately caught my eye. I'm still going to keep it since it's so unusual. I have an eclectic taste in rocks.
