Where the edges have broken way from the stone, what kind of wheel is best to smooth this area out so it looks good? A diamond round burr or is there something better? This is my first attempt at carving fire agate

Christopher Anthony is the resident fire agate pro. Maybe he'll pop in and help you out.
If it were me, I'd probably use the skinny Nova bullet points.

I think Don may have some useful tips as well. That's a tricky piece of fire agate. I would not use any wheels or burrs on it. Instead I would opt for using diamond pastes worked over the stone with stiff, medium and fine brushes on a mandrel. I would start with a coarse diamond grit like 220 or 320 with a stiff bristle brush and work through finer grits 400, 600, 1200, 3000, 8000, 14,000, 50,000, using medium and then soft/fine brushes to correspond with the finder grits. I hope this helps! Also, here is my fire agate carving tutorial: www.dlcgems.com/blog/dlc-gems-fire-agate-carving-tutorial

Don I you don't mind sharing, where are you finding rotary brushes in variable stiffness? And explain, if you will, why you use softer brushes in the polishing stage. Are the stiffer brushes too harsh?

Thanks Don . I usually get my FA grinding/polishing stuff elsewere and didn't think of Rio. I used to do a lot of business with them but my regular orders these days go to other suppliers for some reason. Thanks for the links.

Sorry it took me so long to get to this post. I use, distribute and recommend sintered burs and Nova Points and finishing with 14k Super Polish on a felt bur. Here is a photo of the sets I distribute to use to cut and polish fire agate Burr Set - Copy by CHRISTOPHER LESSO, on Flickr This is the polish 20200802_132009 by CHRISTOPHER LESSO, on Flickr I also have several YouTube videos showing how I cut/carve fire agate. Here is the link to my Youtube page feel free to email me at cajewelrydesign@gmail.com for a faster response
