I spent Saturday and Sunday at my favorite beach, with my lovely and patient wife and came home with about 80 lbs of Jasper and miscellaneous tumble rough. With her help we got some great stuff: About a third of the haul during sorting. Some of the larger Jasper Some of the medium to small size Jasper Some Sugar Agates, notice the hardball sized one to the right!

Whoa, Fat that's a great haul. Not too bad of a deal to hang out on the beach and look for rocks. Did ya take your fishing pole too?

No fishin', though a few folks were catching ocean perch there. I tell you, I was so engrossed in picking up rocks, that I didn't bother with sunscreen or a hat. Needless to say I was sick with sunburn on my head and face on Monday.
The beach was absolutely covered with goodies and we were the only ones picking. I swear, I have more fun finding the darn things than working with them !!

Fat, judging from the above pix and your "Western Oregon" location, you are the one to ask.
I'm going to be in Portland for a few days next month and have managed to set aside most of a day to do some rockhounding/hunting (is there a difference? Where can I go within, say, 90 minutes of Portland for some good rock hunting? Will any beach do? Or do I have to drive down to Newport? Should I head for the river? Mt. Hood? Obviously, I want to go where public access is free and they don't mind you picking up the stones.
Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Well Tex, most of my favorite places lay outside the 90 minute zone. I have not spent much time rockhounding north of the Salem area. The exception to that is that I have found some goodies from Newport, north to the Tillamook area. Some of the best hounding, in my opinion, is between south of Yachats and Carl Washburne park north of Florence. Any of the beach pull-outs in that stretch have interesting rocks to find. Especially 'Stonefield Beach' and 'Carl Washburne Park' beach. www.oregonstateparks.org/park_123.php?md=pic

Holy Schnikey! You did find a crapload there! Nice Haul Fatrichie. Have you ever wandered around towards the South Jetty? I would go in about the first pull-off and wander the beach towards the 4-wheeling area. The best time to go out there is during the week, when there's less 4 wheelers. I've found some very nice agates down there. You may want to try that area as well. I've been down towards Karl Washburn and where China Creek flows....I seem to have the best luck on the South Jetty. Needless to say, it's fantastic just being able to walk around the beach pretty much undisturbed. If you go down that way again, we should hook up. I'm in Florence almost every weekend, or I can be. Just a small handful of what I've found out there...shown wet. I need to get more tumblers! Steve

Ma Nature did do a lot, but I'm gonna rough'em out a bit more anyway!! I've been reading everyone's instructions in the othre threads and I want a batch that looks like yours Stefan!!!
I'm going to go to Carl Washburne this weekend Steve. I found several peices of layered Agate and Jasper there in the 20lb and smaller range in the past. I always come away with good haul there too. You just have to stay away from the satanists that have a permanent camp at the far south end of the beach. The cops won't even go there!!

Cher, All the rocks in the picture are Agates..found on the beach. I think my favorite is the black one. When held up against the sun, it is transparent. Fatrichie....Maybe I'll see you down there Sunday. Where do you live at in Oregon? Steve

Wow. You have better beach rocks in Oregon than we do in Calif. We need a big earthquake offshore(again) and maybe some of those rocks will break loose and drift down here.

Nice haul Fatrichie, I have stayed once in a hotel or motel along the coast and I found some nice lttle agates right on the beach there. There were also little pieces of jasper. There in the area is also the statue of a viking and his old ship. I bought a nice shell there. Must be what...8 years ago now I think. Wow , time sure flies.

Ed, Don't wish too hard for something like that to happen. I mean, how many Quakes has Calif. had in the past week??? I do believe that a big one is just around the corner.... Steve

Yikes I hope all you Californians are gonna be ok- They keep saying the big one is coming- but the geoligist say that the recent quakes are just part of the normal stress relief
