The roughs for these rutilated quartz cabs were so full of inclusions and other imperfections I really doubted I could get decent finished stones from them. But the lure of those fine golden rutile blades made me determined to see if I could save them. It took lots of time and effort but I'm happy with the results. The quartz is a bit more "cloudy" than I'd like but nature is very stingy with perfection. The stones appear much better in hand than against this black background. They are really nice, second is a beautiful cab. I don't think the few veils detract at all. Sometimes you just have to accept stones for what they are.

Beautiful stones, Rick! I agree with pauls, the veils don't detract at all. The second stone is absolutely yummy!

Well worth the extra work.
Photos of your stones always seem to inspire me. Now I must re-order my things to do list. Again.

I love rutilated quartz, too. I don't think veils have to be distracting. Sometimes they get that rainbow sheen that is quite nice.
Question for you guys. Can rutile be black or is that tourmalinated? I just bought a slab that said black rutilated, but I thought it was tourmaline.

It's probably tourmaline (schorl) but there are other acicular black crystals that can show up in clear quartz. Cant think of the names offhand but I'm sure someone will pipe in.
