I'll take a stab at it....Jasper? Thought maybe it was Petrified Wood from Arizona or Utah, but I'm sticking with Jasper. Where'd you get it? Looks very Nice! Steve

In order for your pic to show up in here, when you log into photobucket, look under pic you want to post in here. Third line down, the line says "img", copy and paste that line into your message and your pic will show up in your message.
The rock looks like some kind of jasper. I have some jellybean jasper I got from Banjo that has similar colors in it.

I'm thinking it could be jasper, or maybe some kind of flint. Where did you get it? Can we have a close up? When you click on reply, there's all the icons above the smilies. Click this one, bottom row, 4th button in to put the [img tags in your post. Paste the url of your picture in between the tags. Be sure you don't erase any of the brackets. Cher

Thanks all for the responses. I just got to work and got a chance to log on. Spent most of the day tearing out kitchen cabinets and paneling (the summer's big, and costly, project) and didn't have a chance to get on the computer.
I can't do anything about a closeup until I get home about 2 a.m. Even then, I'm not sure I can do it. As you can see I couldn't even figure out how to get a picture in the actual message. I'll give it a try.
As for where I got the rock, I think I picked it up along a railroad track. It was a 3x4 inch rock sitting in front of the garage for almost a month before I got a chance to grab the hammer and chisel. It was not easy to break. Neither were most of the others, but it was the best looking one. I threw a couple of the reddest pieces in a barrel I was loading (hoping for good things).
I may seek IDs on some other stuff, but, again, not till I get home.
Thanks again,
matt

That's the ticket. Thanks tkw.
There was nothing that said pet rock (no real grain to speak of) to me when I was examining it, so I'll trust the experts and go with jasper. Thanks again.

Sorry tinman, I've already got a small pile of granite awaiting its turn in the barrel.
Now, Jim, flint is one I did not consider. I'll have to go back to the sample photos.
I have a feeling I'm going to refer to a lot of the things I find as "that red rock" or "the striped one." I'm the same way at the museum--I don't know about art, I just know what I like.
