So, I moved some more river rock today...it goes really slowly when you have to spray the pile down with a garden hose, then inspect every shovel full as you're putting it in the power wagon! LOL That being said, I did find another Fairburn Agate in the pile today. There is only the smallest amount of banding showing through the surface, but I can see there is further red just under the surface. So, I'm seriously considering facing this one... A couple weeks ago, I woke up in the morning from a dream where I found a red Fairburn...and now this is the fourth Fairburn I've found with red banding since that dream! (I need to dream I won the lottery!) Nice eye. And, yes, that level of inspection would definitely slow things down. π§

Missed the last two posts, nice! I need to order some river rock and have it delivered... π I'm gonna get with you on two of them to get your opinion on facing/tumbling... No kidding, right?!?! Way jealous. When gravel gets delivered to my house it is limestone I'm not gonna lie...I'm stoked our river rock comes from where it does. My rock guy filled me in. There's two places from which to get the river rock around here. One has agates...the other doesn't. I waited to order until the one that does have them was producing. I was using my noggin! So, I moved some more river rock today...it goes really slowly when you have to spray the pile down with a garden hose, then inspect every shovel full as you're putting it in the power wagon! I still have another 5 tons or so left to go through...

Hmmmm, what does one do with 21 tons of little rocks! I canβt imagine what that pile looks like.

Hmmmm, what does one do with 21 tons of little rocks! I canβt imagine what that pile looks like. I just got finished residing the house and installing new windows and doors...bad thing is, the pile of old siding and windows/doors are still sitting in a pile next to the back deck. Once I can get that to the dump (it would be a real eyesore for the pics), I'll post some pictures of what I've done with all but about 5 tons of that rock. I've surrounded my back deck and put a five foot wide walkway along the entire backside of my house. There's even a "rock garden" of medium and large prairie agates in the river rock.

On several rainy days when I couldn't work on the house, I was out there with an umbrella and a hand rake...just looking! LOL They really are pretty dusty right now, so I'm hoping the snow this winter will clean up the rocks we've spread just a bit for Springtime looking...

Yes it is this year! LOL - One would think for a person who grew up here in South Dakota that I wouldn't mind the cold and snow...but I'm just dreading it this year for some reason... We've got a high wind warning going into effect tomorrow. They're calling for up to 70mph gusts...then rain/snow overnight Wednesday into Thursday. It probably won't stick around long...but I still have to see it and "feel" it! LOL

Very cool. I don't know how you talked your wife into having your own rockbed to search for Fairburns, but congratulations!

LOL - She was opposed to that much rock when I first started describing it to her. I told her in this particular case, since she doesn't mow or weed eat that I got 51% of the vote on this one. We have an acre...I said "I think we won't lose that much grass". After it was done, she said she was glad "we" did it...and she does like it. And we still have 4-5 tons still to put out front next spring when I can finally build the front deck...and for me to pick through in the meantime! LOL

A rose in the river rock? That is impressive.
I was doing landscaping for a previous employer a few years ago. Cleaning up an old elevated garden that had walking trails around it. We purchased some local landscape rock. It was loaded with fossils and agates. Just the basic landscape rock around here.
I like your thinking. Get a bunch of rocks to look through. Low maintenance landscaping. Do you have a sprinkler that waters the yard and rocks? That would be cool and make it easier to see the good ones.

Low maintenance landscaping. Do you have a sprinkler that waters the yard and rocks? That would be cool and make it easier to see the good ones. I wish it came out of the landscaping rock! I should have clarified better. The pics of the "larger" rocks are just ones we have laying around the house. That Desert Rose was actually left on the property when I bought the house years ago - long before I became interested in rocks. The previous owners apparently did a bit of hounding because they left numerous large prairie agates along with that Selenite Cluster (I'm trying to learn! LOL). So, I'm not sure it's exact origin. While the rose didn't come from the rock, I did post in another thread I found a dinosaur toe bone in the mix! The piece with the numerous clam shells as well as the petrified wood came from my wife's family farm in Hermosa, SD. The last pic seems to be a conglomerate of some kind, but I find a lot of that out at Railroad Buttes, SD. I don't water the yard. We live out on "the prairie" kind of...and with an acre, the cost of watering would be outlandish. All the yards in this neck of the woods (figuratively speaking) have "prairie grass" for lawns...no sod out here. Prior to this year, the last two years were full of rain, so the grass was nice and green. This year would be categorized as a "drought" year, so the grass had some nice shades of brown all summer long! LOL As far as "watering" the rocks, I do use the hose and spray them down prior to picking through them. On the very few days it did rain this year, I have been known to go out with my umbrella and hand rake! LOL I hope you were able to snag (with permission) some of the agates and fossils out of that landscaping job!

Smart landscaping! Excellent double use of rocks. I bet every time you look through them, you see new ones.

I traded some more basic rocks for the agates and fossils.
