Finally got my wire today- I decided to get some round and square, maybe move out of my comfort zone a little. I'm being honest with myself and giving this one a B-. Looking for some advice from other wrappers, I went with 22g dead soft for the wrap and I'm thinking I may have made a mistake. It seems a little flimsy- or is it just because it's a large cab, about 2 inches in length? Anyway, here it is, thanks for looking.

I agree. 20 ga. probably would have been a better choice. General rule of thumb is to use heavier gauge wire for larger stones. It's more pleasing and it gives the wrap extra strength to hold the heavier stone.

I like the idea! It’s elegant. I d say considering it’s your first round wire cab in awhile it’s quite good.

Overdone wraps with too much wire don't really do it for me though (think 100' of small wire for one wrap).
I like it Mike, regardless. Do you. If you don't like it, do it again until you do. You are the artist and know what you like.

Yes, 20 g would have been better, but I think this is a very nice wrap. If it were me, I'd redo it just the same in 20 g. It really is very nice.

The fine wire gives it a delicate look. The design is spot on. However it’s kind of like a big boy (like me) who tries to make skinny jeans work. LOL! Keep up the good work, and quit B-minusing yourself. That’s an A that just needs the plus added yet.

I think this is really pretty. I use small gauge for larger stones too sometimes, just to reduce weight. I won't use dead soft for a bunch reasons. To be honest the harder the wire the better I like it all the way around. I like the Agate in your example here too. Thanks for sharing.

This is one of the best kind of threads for me to view. I learn from your trial and error plus the expert comments. I think it looks great, but if you are not happy with the result, it can be reworked. Thanks for sharing.

That's why I post on here, to learn from people that have been through it all before. I still consider myself new at this entire hobby and the combined experience here on RTH is invaluable. It's not that I hate this wrap- I just think I could have done better...

To me it seems like the round wires are what's throwing it off. The square wires just seem to look a bit larger so the stone looks more secure. If I use round wires I tend to go up a size from the square wire on most stones. I don't use a lot of round wire because it just looks less sturdy to me even at a bigger size. It could be that I am just too used to using square wire.

Some of the wraps that I've seen on here with round wire made by more experienced wrappers than me (you know who you are ) look excellent- maybe I'm just a square type of guy!

I have used round wire to wrap but the square sits along the side of the cab so nicely that I prefer it. You can also twist square wire to give it a more fancy look. I don't think you're square....LOL.
