Hello All: We have lots of river rock on our property as landscaping rock, and only a couple are red. So I beat the crap out of this one for about 20 minutes and got this small chip out of it. Could this be Rhyolite? Or maybe just granite? Close up of the small chip that I got out... The metal chisel that I used to break the rock was deformed and dulled. I guessed Rhyloite because in doing some digging on-line I came across a photo which looked similar that they were calling Rhyolite Quartz or Quartz Porphyry. Any help would be appreciated! Todd B. Hello Todd, nice find. Don’t take this as gospel but it looks like red jasper with quartz, to me.

Interesting! I see some rough Red Jasper images on line that do look very similar, but this one is more grainy, and has lots of sparkles (I'm 52 years old, but sparkles is the best descriptor I could think of!:-) Could that graininess and sparkles be the quartz?
