Thanks for sharing the source, and best of luck with the material!

I am sure it is difficult to make every rock in every sale something wonderful, unless it is cut and inspected prior. Hope your second attempt is a success.

This was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a bunch of small pieces. Better yield with a big piece of it has a good pattern. I'm putting in the saw and cutting it across somewhere around the middle and then go from there.

The piece was about 7 inches in length. I took the first cut 2 inches from the small end. I don't have a lot of experience with Royal Imperial. I did get the cut orientation correct. I got a partial pattern because that is all that was there on the small end. The material appears to be high grade and I got a smooth cut without pitting or fractures. The pattern is worth making a cab, but am hoping for more on the other end. The piece is back in the saw and I'm making a facing cut on the larger end. It will take a few cuts to get to the widest.

The facing cut showed no pattern, so I moved the cut to the widest place. I won't get a slab but I will see the pattern. I need to glue the wider face to a board and start slabbing. I made the cut and now have two pieces to slab 3 inches and two inches. At this point I don't expect to get a full pattern or a great pattern. The large end has a centered pattern that will get bigger but also a nearby fracture. My saw is cutting it fast and my break even point is one really nice cab or a couple good ones. Buying rough is like buying lottery scratchers. I believe I got a decent deal but I'm done with RI rough bought blind.

I completed the cutting of the piece. I only cut to get information and don't just start cutting slabs. There wasn't one slab that I would bother to make a cab from. I emailed the gemshop with a picture of the piece received and the best slab from the piece. The subject title of the email was the same as the subject title of this topic. Buying in person, it would have taken one second to put the piece back in the bin. It was not worth my time to try to return it after receipt. It was a learning experience.

Dang. It's such a gamble...but it's like playing the lottery. That one time when you get a 'wow' piece...sigh.

I exchanged emails. I wasn't asking for a refund. They offered pictures. I replied that its hard to buy unfaced rough from pictures. I suggested that if I bought again, someone could pick the pieces for me. Not just grab something and pack it. They should be able to read the rock. The material was suppose to be graded. I could tell before cutting that the piece was unlikely to be good.
