Earlier today I randomly ran across a snake carved out of golden sheen obsidian. Looked pretty cool. Well I suppose it wasn’t all that random, I was looking for rocks, but I wasn’t looking for snake rocks. Cool pic, I always enjoy seeing them.👍

A gold sheen obsidian snake sounds cool! I've got buckets of polished stones that don't match colors/patterns...Going to be an odd assortment of photos coming up soon! Photo #292Some local feldspar, some broken geode pieces, and a few pink/purple agates.

That's a pretty one. Clown? You have a sharp eye to guess Clown! But, this one is actually a Leopard ball python that is Heterozygous for Clown. Meaning: It takes two copies of the Clown gene to produce a Clown. This snakes has one copy (making it a Het), but, you were able to guess it regardless. Kudos to you!

I am trying to get better at identifying the markings. I don't know if I'm right, but clowns always have the "face" to me which it kind of does. what makes it leopard?

Something else I've always been curious about. Sorry if it sounds dumb, but how do you identify genes? Is it through parentage or are you able to send samples out to test?

I am trying to get better at identifying the markings. I don't know if I'm right, but clowns always have the "face" to me which it kind of does. what makes it leopard? Keep in mind that there are nearly a HUNDRED (or more--these days) genes and only dozens of them are clearly distinguishable from each other...in most cases only parentage or selective breeding can confirm ID. Leopard is normally visually characterized by a bold pattern with increased melanin in the dark areas. The main distinguishing feature for a Leopard is that the overall pattern looks like it is 'melting'. Genetic combinations (like mixing Leopard and Clown will interfere with visual identification). Something else I've always been curious about. Sorry if it sounds dumb, but how do you identify genes? Is it through parentage or are you able to send samples out to test? That is a great question! Some genetic traits are obviously visible when expressed. Holding a clown next to a piebald, you can figure out which is which pretty easy... However, other genes have to be selectively bred and proven to be inherited traits either as a dominant, co-dominant, or recessive. Some genes are even linked to sex chromosomes making them even more complex. It is a common occurrence for a breeder to think they have found a new gene only to find out that they have an odd visual expression of a pre-existing one. Currently: Lineage is the main process in which genes are identified. However, there is a new service that will genetically ID very specific genes for you based on a sample of your ball pythons shedded skin. The genetic morph ID selection is restricted to very common traits (for now). This is useful because in cases where you *may* have hatched a 7 or 8 gene snake, genetically testing to prove to your buyer that all the genes are there could be the difference between the value of $100 or $2000 for the specimen.

Tha k you for the explanation. It's all pretty fascinating
I was watching a guy talk about a new morph and I want to say it was way more than 2,000 for one 😂

I just remembered it was called the monsoon Yep, the first one was produced in 2013. It will be a while before breeding ramps up and the price begins to creep down. As a recessive trait with a striking visual pattern they will hold their value for a long time. Devaluation in Ball Python morphs is staggering, and is the bane of any 'for profit' breeder. I purchased a Highway Ball Python (Yellowbelly+Gravel genes) in 2021 for $200 (shown below), just a few years prior you would be lucky if you could find one for sale, and if you did it would be ~$1500.

I like all your rock-with-snake pictures.
I’d have warmer and fizzier feelings toward all snakes if I knew which were venomous and which were not. Something like a red dot on their head….

Omy goodness what a beautiful snake! I was mind blown by some of the prices they were asking Thanks! Some of the combinations that can be made with the Highway morph are super awesome. Unfortunately from a genetic standpoint: the two genes that pair up to make this combo are visually identical in the Het form. This makes breeding a Highway combination morph an intensive endeavor. Prices on designer morphs can easily go up to $10K, and if you have a 'Worlds First' or a unique pattern...you can ask for more... My gf constantly views my hobby with dollar signs in her eyes. That's an awesome snake! I see where the "Highway" name came from. Thanks! There is another combo called 'Freeway' which is similar, but, with different genetics. It is also very impressive. I like all your rock-with-snake pictures. I’d have warmer and fizzier feelings toward all snakes if I knew which were venomous and which were not. Something like a red dot on their head…. Thanks! Hahaha! I hear ya! In terms of my snakes, I only have non-venomous...so it makes things easy for me!
