I just joined the forum, and this is my second post. I’ve done some searching and reading of older posts, but I’m looking for some guidance.
My wife has been getting into rocks and fossils. Last night I purchased a used MK 101 saw through Craigslist, and I’m not sure what I should get for a blade and run for coolant. I’ve ordered a vice for the saw already.
I expect we’ll be cutting a mixture of sedimentary rocks to look at fossils as well as much harder things like jasper and Lake Superior agates.
I’m confused by the info I’ve found on blade speeds, kerf, and coolants. Can anyone suggest a blade that I should be looking at? Also, should I just run water, or do I need to look at any kind of additives, or is oil advisable?
Thanks, Jay

I looked it up and a MK101 is a tile saw and would use water. Cutting rocks with it would wear blades faster than a saw using oil as a lubricant. I used my 8 inch trim saw to cut slabs using water and an additive for some years but I went through a lot of blades. The kerf can vary and the thicker the kerf the more the waste. Too thin a kerf might make the blade flex too much. I would start with he kerf of the blade that comes with the saw.
