Hi all, I was very curious about the method BearCreek posted awhile back about turning gold tiger eye into red tiger eye, so I tried it. I followed his directions, but I used 470 F as the final temperature instead of 450 F, just because that's what my oven would go to and I figured the more heat the better. I did it in a toaster oven in the backyard, so as not to heat up the house on a summer afternoon. I have no idea what red tiger eye is supposed to look like, so I'm not sure if this was successful or not. In the photos below, the two rocks on the left side of each image were not heat treated, and the two on the right side were heat treated. Here's a side view. It looks to me like only the bottom-right heat-treated piece had much colour change. And here's a top view. This rind on the top and bottom of both heat-treated pieces got much darker. That's all folks.

Break em up and tumble them, we'd like to see th results. Rough stone never does the color justice.

I just finished up one batch today and got another batch started in rough. That's why I tried the heat treatment today, I wanted to toss the red tiger eye in to begin the long process towards polished stones. The last batch was started in April. At that rate, I'll have the red tiger eye ready by about Christmas Maybe after a couple weeks in 60/90 I'll take some shots of them wet to give a better idea about how they might eventually turn out. I only heat treated two stones, just as an experiment.

Hmmm , an interesting colour change, I wonder with how many different types of rock this can be done?
Does anybody have a clue?
Good luck with the tumbling , I await the results with patience haha.

Good job, can't wait to see the finished result. Good idea, using the toaster oven, hope your neighbors didn't see you cooking them rocks, they might just call the men in the little white jackets. ;D

can you only heat treat them at the rough stage or can you treat them after they've already been through a couple of grinding stages kim

I don't see why it wouldn't work at any stage, although you might not want to try it after pre-polish or polish, in case it wrecks the finish.
And for Cookie...............
Remember when you ran away And I got on my knees and begged You not to leave Because I'd go berserk? Well! You left me anyhow and then The days got worse and worse And now you see I've gone Completely out of my mind.
And
They're coming to take me away, Ha-ha They're coming to take me away, Ho-ho Hee-hee-haa-haa To the funny farm Where life is beautiful all the time And I'll be happy to see those Nice young men in their clean white coats and They're coming to take me away, ha-ha!
You thought it was a joke and so you laughed, you laughed, when I had said that losing you would make me flip my lid. Right? You know you laughed I heard you laugh You laughed, you laughed and laughed and then you left but Now you know I'm utterly mad
And
They're coming to take me away, ha-ha, They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee hee, haa haa To the happy home With trees and flowers and chirping birds And basket-weavers who sit and smile And twiddle their thumbs and toes And they're coming to take me away, ha-hahaha...
I cooked your food, I cleaned your house, And this is how you pay me back for All my kind, unselfish, loving deeds, Hah? Well you just wait, they'll find you yet And when they do they'll put you in the ASPCA you mangey mutt!
And
They're coming to take me away, Ha-ha They're coming to take me away, Ho-ho Hee-hee-haa-haa To the funny farm Where life is beautiful all the time And I'll be happy to see those Nice young men in their clean white coats and They're coming to take me away, ha-ha!
To the happy home With trees and flowers and chirping birds And basket-weavers who sit and smile And twiddle their thumbs and toes And they're coming to take me away, ha-hahaha...
To the funny farm Where life is beautiful all the time And I'll be happy to see.....

Nice color change. Okay RS, I know you didn't have those lyrics memorized(or did you?) so where did you get them?

It would be great if I actually could remember all those lyrics....but..... I just did some googling, cutting and pasting. Funny though, as I read the lyrics I can hear every beat of the song, memories are strange that way.

Hey Rollingstone,
They look pretty good, you might extend the duration of your time cycles and see if it doesn't help with a deeper color transformation.
I have always done mine in a stove, where the stove is designed to function at a given temperature for a period of time. I am wondering if your toaster oven actually had a sustained temperature? I am also wondering how much heat was lost (if any) by using a toater oven instead of a stove? You might try extending the duration of each cycle and see if that helps with your coloration.
Looks good though!
John
