I can remember back when I was a kid, we were panning for gold in Colorado, in the vicinity of the foundation for a small crushing mill. Picked up some wire gold, but found 5 or 6 steel balls from the crusher. I wish I knew where they went because they are probably worth more than the small amount of gold we found that day. They were interesting in that they showed the manufacturing technique, had a big fat seam in the middle where the 2 halves had been welded together. I find them often with my metal detector at old lode mines. They were from the ball mill. The only fun is trying to tell somebody they are cannon balls from the War of 1812. If you find them at a gold mine, they might have gold imbedded on the ball.

Wow you guys find some incredible things! amygdule I love the agate mermaid. greig that's big list of items. The mining items sound very cool. Little pieces of industrial history. I occasionally find bones and teeth in Rowlett Creek but so far it's been animal. (I hope) I found this yesterday. Apparrently space marines also hang out at the creek.

While exploring the coastline today I found another doll posed on a rock. I guess I'm not the only weirdo that plays with dolls.

I am creeped out by the starfish. I hope none followed you home.
Best random thing I found -- I thought was a piece of trash when I picked it up --an old can lid-- but it wasn't. Turned out to be a mid 19th-century bronze medallion from China, complete with dragon. Very odd thing to find in an inland lake.

I grew up in an old gold mining town, I got into rocks by hunting around on the mine heaps for Quartz crystals and Pyrite crystals. One day scratching around i found a full stick of Dynamite, I backed off but my mad mate grabbed it and took it home where he set about hitting it with a hammer to try and get it to explode. (I told you he was mad) Then he built a fire in his yard and tossed the stick into it, it didn't explode but it did burn pretty ferociously. All second hand information I kept well away when he was doing stupid.

This same bloke and his brother got hold of some .22 ammo. They divided the bullets up and then took up positions at opposite ends of their driveway with hammers trying to hit each other with the bullets.

I found half a case of dynamite in a mine. It was very old and I'm sure the nitro had settled out and was volatile. I got out fast.
