Hi RTH - I recently brought back home some Petosky stones from my trip back home in June and have been working on them. Most have turned out good however I am having issues with a few stones that have white specks that won't wash out. My process is as follows: START: Tumble them in 90/120 SilC for 2 days or shaped how I want them. I then rinse and scrub them and put them back on the tumbler for round two for 1 day until smooth. Again I rinse and brush out all cracks. I do this throughout the process. Next I will finish by the hand, going from 320 grit wet sand paper to 800. Again washing in between. I then use AO paste on denim to create a shine... This is where I start seeing white specks that I can't get out with a final hand wash. Below are some pics of my dilemma. Any help in the right direction on how to resolve will be appreciated.

For those that develop white spots, can you take them back to 800 grit paper and try and get those pits out?

I usually tumble mine in 220 grit for a day or two. I fill the barrel at least 75% or even more to avoid bruising. You can also use plastic or ceramic media with them which also avoids them banging each other up too much. Sometimes I do that, sometimes I don't. I agree with Toad that you probably need to go back a step to get those spots out.

Superb! Petoskies that good get polished on my cabbing machine, we don’t find too many like that!
