a while back Stoner posted a great idea using a cookie jar to make a fishbowl. well, i thought it was the coolest thing, so i made one for my dad's birthday. i searched high and low but couldn't find the right kind of cookie jar, so i ended up getting a regular plastic bowl at the pet store. (where i also picked up the plastic plant..) but the rocks are tumbled by yours truly. and the fish i shaped on the grinder, put them in the tumbler in prepolish for a week, then a week in CPP. thanks again, Stoner for letting me copy your great idea, my dad is gonna like it. he can finally have pets he doesn't have to worry about feeding when he goes away for a few days! thanks for looking! That is amazing, - I'm constantly in awe of all the fantastic ideas folks get out there - those have got to be brazilian agates right? They make nice tropical fish! What do you put in the water so it doesn't turn green?

well, i just put it together today, but i'm hoping that the distilled water plus a few drops of clorox will hold off immediate algae. the top does come off and all the little fish are on fishing line (of course!!) fixed to the top, so cleaning isn't impossible if it does get contaminated.
and yes, Tweet, those are brazilian agates, they make great fish. i emailed a girlfriend to show her what i'd done (a non-rockhounder) and she loved it and wants one now too...(what have i got myself into here?)
thanks everyone for nice comments,
KD

Alright KD. You did a fantastic job on those fish. They are so cool to sit back and look at. I had a lot of fun shaping the fish, how about you? Your dad is gonna love it.

i put a very small notch in the dorsel with the trim saw, then knotted the end of my fishing line and epoxied the knot in the notch. i epoxied little plastic "eyes" to the lid, looped the fishing line through those and used round toothpick points as pins to secure the line while i played with length and positioning, then i epoxied them into place too. i've had one fatality so far (one fish came loose and fell off) so i've made one repair to date. now i hope the rest of it hangs in three at least until after sunday!!

just a closing note to this thread, it was a nail biting ride up to my folks house today, i felt sure with every bump in the road the fish were going to fall off their strings, i did get a wet lap (note to self, next time travel in pieces and assemble on site).
but my parents were amazed and extrememly pleased with their new generation of pet rocks!!! (i swear when i first took it out of the box, he thought they were real fish and was about to moan and complain...)
good day had by all,
thanks again, Stoner,
KD

I do some flower arranging and there is a crystal clear acrylic that looks just like water, that might be an idea to use to fill the bowl with the rocks plants and fish suspended in it.... it hardens very well...... just a thought.... very nice idea for the fish bowl you have there and looks so nice ! donna
