I envy those of you who live in areas where the beautiful rocks and gems are available. Down here in South Texas, the pickings aren't that plentiful. This evening I went out in the pasture and creeks and found a few that I want to ask about, and identify. (BTW I hope I do this right in this photo album) Lots of large petrified wood, which I do recognize, and quartz everywhere, but a few odd things I don't know. any thoughts on if they are suitable for tumbling or just paving the driveway? this is some of the pet wood [http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b57/pekesmoke/rock5.jpg] [http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b57/pekesmoke/rock1.jpg this is some strange mixture I found, lots of it. [http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b57/pekesmoke/rock3.jpg and these have some interesting markings and what is the large red one? or any of them ? I have no idea what they are called or if they are good,,,, all seem to be very hard, I know some are flint.... Welcome to the group Pekesmoke.
You got yourself a nice haul of Pet wood there!
the ones in the 2nd picture look like Jasper to me.
The one in your hand looks like fossil ___ something. maybe some sort of plant life?

I know the pet wood...but that shiny one that is round and very silvery looking..I just have no clue what that is..
I do pasture rocks all the time and most of them turn out very nice. Love the pet wood. You have some very nice pet wood there. I see some jasper? and quartz. My opinion,,,throw it all in the tumbler ans see what comes out.

Hey Pekesmoke! Welcome to the board! Say, What part of South Texas are ya from? nice load of rocks! I live in McAllen and have seen rocks like yours in our railroad tracks : I see lots of petrified wood, quartz, quartzite, chert, some flint, and some "leaverrites". There are TONS of agates to be found not too far west of here. ralph

I suppose everyone here has gone through the "first stage" of this habitual hobby ! So I don't seem too strange for being excited about my "firsts",,,,, I know I can buy rocks and I have bought the small box of jasper and agate when I got the machine, but you have to admit there is something about finding your own ! I just need to study what is I have found now! I have only had something in the tumblers since yesterday morning and I have to force myself NOT to LOOK yet ! <G> instead of mixing this first time, I put all pet rock in one barrel, all quartz in another, all of what I think is jasper and similar rock in the other, and the pieces I bought in the fourth..... hopefully they won't be destroyed this way.... I hate to think of my first being a total disaster...... thanks for the input and the encouragement.... I also show dogs and showed horses for years,,,,, this will keep me home and busy ! <G>
oh and for the question of where I live, I suppose I used the term "south Texas" too loosely, I live more in central Texas and south, about 70 miles west north west of Houston..... donna

Pekesmoke... go ahead and look. Look as often as you like. Just don't move the rocks to the next stage prematurely.

Wow Donna, that's some really nice pet wood you got. I totally agree, finding your own stuff is great. It's fun to be out enjoying nature at it's best and coming home with stuff like you found makes it all the better.

Hey Donna, Welcome, and the thrill of finding/buying/trading nice rocks is never gone - hopefully you'll never lose that thrill - only not everyone at home is as thrilled as we are over the found rocks (which is why i don't have to fight over the tumbler)

peek all you want! Soon you'll have a grinder and a dremel and soo much rock doing different things you'll probably forget to check the tumblers everyweek (like I just did) Enjoy it while you got it simple!

She seems to have one that her son wanted in school and he is now gone off to college. She said he layered large rocks "just to see what was inside".....LOL it may be a "toy" but then it might be a good buy,,,,, she is well able have afforded to buy him a good one.... I'm checking on it next week.... ;D donna
