I've been working on some Brazilian agates for what seems an eternity, tumbling them in coarse grind with all kinds of other stuff, and gradually stockpiling those that were ready to move ahead. Finally got enough to make a run for polish. These came from 4 separate chunks of Brazilian agate, each of which had their own unique character. So I took pics of each of the busted up nodules before tumbling, then again after polishing. That's why they are named #1, #2, #3, and #4. I took a lot of pics, so to be fair to those on dialup I'm splitting this into two postings. Here's #1 and #2. First up, #1 before tumbling After polish My favourites of #1 Bit closer Tried to backlight these using a kid's light table. Don't think it did much, but here's the pic anyway Next up, Brazilian agate #2, rough After polish My favourites of #2 And another attempt at backlighting, which also didn't seem to do much. Whew! All those little symbols and copying, etc, get kind of confusing.... I need a break before putting up the next 2 agates!

OMG Those are gorgeous, and what an awesome shine. These are all pieces you just busted up, nothing slabbed or sawed? I'm totally amazed, there doesn't seem to be any small fractures at all. Those are just stunning!
Cher
PS ... Thank you so much for your consideration for those of us on dial-up. The only way I can see the posts with the really huge pics is to go mow my lawn for an hour while they download, it's really frustrating.

is that the key then to Brazilian agates is to run them in coarse for a REALLY long time? i'd kinda given up on those types of rocks because of the fracturing....gives me new hope as those are splendid, superb and super shiney!!

Thanks for the kind words!
Yes, these were hammer (and chisel) cracked. On one or two I needed to use a sledgehammer to get them very roughly broken... agate is hard stuff!
These did take an awful long time in coarse, but I guess it was worth it in the end. I would say most of the stones individually would have spent 6-8 weeks in coarse, but a few would probably have gone 10 weeks or more. Actually, I'm still grinding away on a few stragglers, but that's for a future batch sometime.

Hey RS. I just love brazilian agates and you did a superb job on those. I'll check out #3&4 and post more comments.
And yes Kim, I'm wiping down the keyboard as I type, partly from drool and also from spitting out my drink after reading your comment.
