One I shaped last night, another end cut with fairburn pattern. About an inch tall. Thanks for looking!

There's a lot of punch packed into that little inch! That one's a beauty!

That is gorgeous!
There's only one way to know what's really inside a rock. It always surprises me to see inside after the first cut.

I know, right? It's like Christmas sometimes... Of course more often than not we don't find much. And if this particular stone were bigger I would grind the orange part in the center down more- I think it's hiding some of the pattern. Maybe.

I like that orange colored splotch in there, especially because it has those baby orbs around it. I'm glad it wasn't thicker. I really like it exactly how it is.

But what if it happened to be hiding more orbs? Therein lies the conundrum. Cutting opal is like that. Do I take a little more off and maybe it will be brighter, or will I completely grind off the color bar? Knowing when to stop is the hard part.
