The most desirable way to get picture jasper slabs with a good pattern is to pick through them at a rock show. The next best way is from good pictures on the web. Rough, even faced is a gamble. When someone has a source for Blue Mountain rough at a reasonable price, the investment is time. Buying rough on ebay at $50 a pound is usually not going to work out well. Even an attractive slab doesn't mean attractive patterns for cabs because the pattern can be too big. This is the story. I wanted to buy some Blue Mountain material to make some nice cabs. Every day, I look at ebay slabs and occasionally Etsy for suitable slabs and I don't see anything. Some months ago I bought a thick slab from Tim at orerockon from a picture and got three nice cabs for a reasonable price. He sells rough by the square inch without pictures and doesn't want to take any. This would be a foolish purchase for me, but I was desperate and feeling foolish so I ordered 50 square inches at a $1 an inch. I sent an email asking for good cabbing slabs not display slabs. Tim did some work at the Lucky Strike mine and slabbed some rough. He didn't want to go through the slabs so he decided to send me all his small slabs which he said would likely be more than 50 inches. They were shipped in a MFRB, so I'm into it for $65. Despite it being a holiday, the package is out for delivery today....anticipation it's driving me..... The return on investment on $65 in lottery scratchers is but I'm guessing about $20. I'm hoping I do better with the slabs. I will post a picture of the contents when it is delivered.

I sorted the slabs. 10.41 ounces of worst and unusable. 15.22 ounces of usable. 17 ounces of better. Better than ebay and I should do ok.

LOL - you did better than I would do with scratch tickets! So, I'm going to say when it's a "wash", it's a win!
Funny you used that analogy! My wife and I were out hounding and I told her looking for Fairburns was the same as buying scratch tickets...just out about $12 in gas rather than $100 in tickets! Of course, we've been having the same amount of luck with Fairburns as we would on tickets! LOL

I've laid out 15 preforms that could produce saleable cabs and half are nice. A lot of areas with impurities to work around. I'm using about 10% of the area for the lot which was way over 100 sq. inches. The two lighter color slabs on the bottom row of the last picture look to be from the same rock as I bought from him before and will produce nice cabs.
I'll trim them up and post pictures tomorrow.
