Recently I found this very peculiar looking rock in the creek nearby. The strange shape caught my eye immediately and I took it home. It looked like a big omnivore's tooth. Most of the fossils in this area are Cretaceous and Marine so I didn't really believe it was a tooth. However its shape looks very organic and dissimilar to the normal rocks in this area. It's covered with a light layer of calcite so I can't really see the surface without cutting it. Anyone have any ideas? Is it just a cool rock? Side views Top view Bottom view

If my wife were to see this, she would say it was a tooth...but she thinks every triangular rock she finds is a shark tooth! So, I'm not too sure how much credence I'd put into that opinion! I'm curious to see who chimes in on this one. I can see where you'd be seeing an herbivore/omnivore tooth...I can see it too(th)!

Fossilman, you are needed here! The top view sure looks tooth-ish to me. I don’t know.

I could believe it’s a tooth. No idea what kind, though.

Probably fell out from infrequent flossing. ;-)

Sort of looks like does not mean it is likely to be. I'd say any resemblance is coincidental.

Interesting find, to me it doesn't appear to be a tooth. Like the commercial says, "I just don't see it."

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll probably crack it open or clean off the calcite to see what the rock is really like. Just didn't want to bash it if there was a chance it might be some odd aquatic fossil or tooth. greig your comment made me laugh.

Maybe you could use some of these to work on it? Just poking fun...don't "bite" my head off! LOL

Put it in a bowl of stool cleaner to remove the calcite .

I just don't see it either but then again I'm not a tooth expert. I found bison teeth along the Yellowstone River in Montana but they actually looked like teeth, not like rock. Took them to the local dino museum and found out they were from the 1800's and definitely bison teeth, pretty cool.

Oh Jason that pic is making my teeth twinge lol. Love the puns! Looking forward to seeing what's inside the rock. I found another awhile back that was shaped like a coral. It ended up being pinksih inside with dark grey dendrites. Pretty cool. There are some shapes that reoccur frequently in the creek. I find these all over. I called them goat feet They have a variety of different materials inside of them when I've cut them open. some even contain hematite.
