Hello my wife and I just got into rockhounding this year we have made 4 trips out togather and have went so far as wading in a river looking at rocks and looking in the cold and rain. I think we got the bug bad. As of yet we have no books to go by but we have been piking up petrified wood, agates, jasper and chalcedony mainly. I thought I had agate identified pretty good but I just heard from a local rouckhound that agate has to have banding to be agate otherwise it is chalcedony. I may be wrong but I thought chalcedony was more opaque and agate more translucent with or with out banding.

Welcome from South Dakota! I've got plenty of prairie agates (which aren't really agates) all around where I hound, but am constantly pursuing the elusive Fairburn Agate! One of these days...one of these days!

Hi and welcome from Mn. We all have been inflicted with the disease and the only cure is more rocks www.minerals.net/mineral/chalcedony.aspxThere are also some great descriptive threads on here as well that talk about rocks and the identification of them

I meant to add, there are several great members on here from Montana who I'm sure will be able to point you and your wife in the right direction up there!
