Well I had no time to play with the KD stuff cause my sis is in town from Texas- we were going to the all you can eat steak night at the local resturant- Well We get there and she hands me this very heavy bag! Semms she has a friend (Samantha) who works up in Michigan at a rock processing center (they make those sample mineral displays) Well Sam knows my passion for rock so she asked her boss how much he would charge for some of the scrap- He handed her a bag and told her to fill it for free! so Sam flew the rocks to my sis then she flew them up her! so here they are Present #2 Dry Wet Some Lakers they processed and tossed in the scrap heap! And another shot! Funny thing is that I had this stuff scattered all over the table and other diners were giving me very funny looks- then my wife reaches over and says in a not so quite voice- Quit playing with those damn rocks now!- So there you go!

Cool present! That one in front of the plate in pic 2 that has swirls in it, that one should look great once polished.

*smile* You're just a good rockhead at heart. Does your wife give you funny looks if you're out walking and bending down picking up rocks? My son's wife thinks we're just very strange that we get such a big kick out of rocks.

She has learned to live with that- I look down and she watches were I'm going (honey cliff edge edge EDGE HEY STUPID WATCH OUT FOR THE CLIFF!!!!!) she is starting to appreciate the rocks a bit more (actually looks at em when they are wet) but she does shake her head at times (like last night!)

got that second barrel just in time! those are GORGEOUS, perfect for tumbling!!!
can you imagine having a job at a rock processing plant? for rockhounds it would be like being an alcoholic and going to work as a bartender...sooner or later, you'd get caught sneaking pockets full of choice rocks, but i bet you could get a few ton first if you were sneaky. or maybe you could arrange for an employee discount (will work for rocks).
haha, congrats on a day full of presents!

That is pretty much what Sam does- SHe gets minium wage to break big rocks into small- Right now she is smashing up large chunks of Sulfur! She is going to see if they would be will to sell the scrap buckets (instead of dumping them in the gravel parking lot!) I gues they get 2 to 3 - 5 galloon buckets of scrap (mainly what you see here- lots of agates and jaspers) a month- Can you imagine buying a 5 gallon bucket of tumbling rough at a time? ? I asked my sister to see if I can pick up a couple (hell the shipping would be killer but this stuff is pretty freakin awesome) I'll keep everyone posted- as the place only runs durning the summer so time is short but I got my fingers crossed (for at least one bucket!)

how do they bust them up to such nice precison size, or is there a lot of wastage that we don't see there? i'm really interested in (a) the process and (b) the potentail rocks that may become available due to this happy coincidence in the friends network....
please keep us posted!

gosh that would be like the alcoholics i've seen that work all week then hand their paycheck over to the bar where they drank on a tab all week. you'd have to hand over your paycheck every week for the rocks you took out. do they have a quota like some factories?

Wow, excellent presents.
Do you know if this rock processing plant is in the upper peninsula or lower Peninsula. Would you know what town? I get over to the upper every so often ... if it's up that way I think I'll start stalking the place. ;D

It's in the UP at an old copper mine- They mine samples of copper for the science kits- and import a lot of other rock for samples- These were the rejects (!!!!) that would not fit in the kits- I think they use a crusher on the harder stuff and just hand tools for softer stuff- They have a swa also (some of the chunks are cut offs!) And I think they must do something with some lakers (I have some that were cut) They only work the summer (too much snow to mine in the winter) So I'm hoping to be able to score some stuff soon- Sam is working on her Masters in Geology and this is just a summer job for her- Probably won't work there next year- I'll keep you all posted as events unfold!
