Iβve been busy at work - LOVE the turtle, but as was stated above it probably wonβt qualify as a cabochon for this contest. Youβre welcome to have another try, for sure! Iβm still glad you found the turtle. ETA: From the rules link in the OP - βThe shape needs to be simple enough to create with wheels, i.e. a cabochon, not intarsia.β

(ha ha), but I do have a question. Since a fair number of our members dremel their cabs, would allowing for that possibility make this a plausible entry? I honestly don't know, since I don't dremel. I guess a flexshaft would work, but that would definitely stray into carving territory. The turtle is quite cool.

Thatβs a great question stephan. For this exact contest we will keep to the rules as listed. Jugglerguy makes some really nice tumbled preforms with intricate designs, so it could be considered. If the RTH membership is interested in changing this rule for future contests, please βlikeβ either this post or stephanβs post above. Thank you.

Iβm not sure that my preforms would be considered cabs though. I have made some Michigan shapes that I dome, so those might be considered to be cabs.

Just having some fun. I think it would be doable with a dremel... probably need to make the neck thicker in real life to avoid breaking, but I didn't feel like spending the time just to edit the outline.

You did a great job with the outline for sure. Itβs hard to make these calls. I still remember that awesome longhorn you found awhile ago.

We have had the conversations before where we decided that a dome is a must for a cab. Obviously a lot of people here have been making domed shapes that they then tumble polish. BUT, the dome is a complete dome going from end to end. I don't know how that turtle could be domed. I think we should stick to the rules.

These are both domed: Love both of them, for different reasons. The Petoskey Turtle is very clever. The detail on the carved one is amazingly realistic.

These are both domed: The shell (petoskey) is obviously domed. That is not one piece of rock, so it's rather like comparing apples and bananas. The smaller one is so realistic, I'm not even sure if it is rock. But, again, the shell can be worked as a cab, but not the rest of it.

Pssst, pretty sure the smaller one is a real, live little turtle, Tela. He's probably quite happy with his little domed shell as it is, lol.

Thanks all for your input. I think we have a good consensus. Letβs stay with shapes that can be made into cabochons. Appreciate it guys! Keep the great ideas coming!

I don't do carvings and if I did, it wouldn't look like a turtle, let alone real. I know this isn't the same as the turtle in question, I was just stirring the pot. Mission accomplished.
