That's what this slablet was labeled as. It was found in a box in one of the estate collections I bought, but there was no location info. It could be true. IMG_2376_Petrified fish eggs? by Stephan T., on Flickr The fractured side of the slab looks grainy, like it could be silicified mud. Some of the little balls broke with the matrix, some stayed intact, indicating the possibility of two different materials cemented together. Also, some of the orbs have the appearance of having something inside that is not spherical. If fish eggs is what we have, it's pretty cool. The hardness is less than steel. I wonder if it will take a polish. On the other hand, it is entirely possible that someone gave fanciful name to some boring-colored orbicular material. Definitely not jasper, though. For now, we'll go with the fish (or maybe frog) eggs, unless I get good feedback suggesting otherwise.

That makes sense. Original owner may have taken the name too literally.
