Hi all, got set up with an Ameritool flat lap recently and I've made a few cabs! Total noob here so (constructive) criticism is welcome. Looking forward to getting involved in the local lapidary club when that starts up again. From left to right: Web Serpentine that I wire-wrapped, Bloodstone, Unknown (probably some kind of Jasper, found it in northern MI), Snowflake Obsidian x2, Tiger's Eye Iron, Web Serpentine again The web serpentines are my favorite for sure, probably because they hide the imperfections with their pattern. I did a much better job on the larger obsidian than the smaller one, you can probably see the scratches pretty easily in the smaller one. I also screwed up the shape on the tiger's eye, I'm thinking some of the layers wear more easily than others. I think my biggest issue is getting an even dome, I'm finding it kind of tough on the flat lap. Hopefully I'll get the hang of it but part of me is thinking I should've just gone for the super expensive wheeled machines from the get-go. I ordered two more intermediate grits so hopefully those help with shaping and getting out some of the deep scratches, it seems like I spend forever on the 360 grit. Photographing these guys is tough! Thanks for looking!

Nice looking cabs. Photographing cabs/rocks is tough.

If those are your first cabs, I think you did a great job!
One of the most important things you can do to make doming easier for yourself with a flat lap is to put rubber pads under your resin discs so you have some gives that helps to alleviate those cursed flat spots and "faceting" that happens. While you can do perfectly good domes without them, it sure does make life easier.
Since you just started using your machine, I think your 180 grit just needs to be broken in a bit more. The stones you were working aren't particularly hard and the diamonds are sticking up nice and high on new disc. Either ease up on how hard you're pressing the rock to the disc (let the diamonds do the work) or take a hard agate and lightly grind with all over the face of the lap to knock down the high spots. You shouldn't be getting such deep gouges in your stones. Go easy on the stones and the lap and it will last you a good long time.

Off to a great start! The thing that really helped me starting out was using a loupe to see the scratches up close before moving to the next grit. I just couldn't see the fine scratches very well - especially at the higher grits - and would move on. I ended up with a bunch of polished scratches lol.

fernwood Thanks! hummingbirdstones That is definitely good advice. I have some agate pieces lying around so I'll probably do that this weekend. As for the rubber pads, have you had experience doing this? I'd hate to have to buy new resin discs if the adhesive doesn't easily reapply... I've seen that advice before but I'm just nervous about trying to take the discs off, put a rubber pad on, and reapply the discs. agatewhisperer That's an excellent idea, I'm going to have to get a loupe asap. Polished scratches is exactly what I have with the smaller obsidian piece.

Your cabs are really done well, especially for a flat lap. Nice work!
