I just got a bunch of opalized wood and these two pieces were in it. Can anyone tell me what kind of wood they might be? Trish

Trish, In the top pic, I think the piece on the right is petrified palm wood, with the exposed face going with the grain instead of across it. If that's correct, then the top and bottom of the piece of wood should have a bunch of little dots... the tubes in the palm tree that transported the water and nutrients. The other piece, I have no clue, but it sure is a great piece!

It looks like a coral pattern on the outside, but it is definitely Petrified Wood. I should have take a picture of the other side. It's very shiny. Trish

if the spotted one is in fact a piece of piece of petrified "plant", I'd lean towards fern or something that came from a swamp... like a cluster of cat tails or something along those lines.
But I have to go with Trish... looks like ocean life to me as well.

Hmm... might be petrified palm ROOT though... I seem to recall that it has some pretty wild patterns and much larger tubes.
On second thought, I don't think so. I looked up some pics of petrified palm root in google images and they don't seem to match.

Here are a couple of closeups of the inside. Pardon the shadow, it's raining outside. It's definitely opalized wood. Trish

Hey Trish, just my two cents worth, but I don't think it looks like wood to me. Petrified plant life for sure, but I don't think it's wood. I find a lot of similar material around here and it's not wood. It's not really coral either, but it is very similar to it.

I've seen some of that on here before, I think it was a friend of deepsouth's. It's a form of palm. I even remember that actual plant was shown in comparison. Deepsouth, you out there?

Hi Cher, No, I haven't slabbed any yet. I don't want to cut these two. I'm saving them for display. I have one I'm going to try to cut tomorrow that has a lot of beautiful white Opal in it. I'll take some pics when I get it cut. Trish

I seem to remember the Palm wod discussion and it went along the lines of some of it being very coral like- I think that is what you have here- Both wonderful!
