I have a bunch of them and started sanding them by hand, in the process realizing that the backs are also pretty gross and would like to use a safe solution to clean them off. After doing some research, I've read that white vinegar is an option, as well as iron out, and even acetone. Thoughts? Most of the pieces have a nice iridescence that I do not want to compromise.

I'm interested in this as well. I have several shell pieces that I'm pretty sure are iron pyrite under their rusty calcite coatings.
