Two dino bone (from a slab that I stabilized about 10 years ago), one rhodonite and an "autumn leaves" brecciated jasper. The seller called it "Stone Canyon," but I migt be willing to call it "Stone Canyon-type." It's a little darker/browner than what I've seen of Parkfield material, but it could be from a relatively close locality. DSC_1439_Four cabochons by Stephan T., on Flickr A bit washed out in parts, and too dark in others — different stones wanted different exposures. This is the best "group shot." I'll get some individuals soon.

Very nice! The Stone Canyon material looks exactly like stuff I've had for years that was ID'd as Stone Canyon. I've cut a couple of recent cabs from it and can post them for comparison if you like.

miket was working with some dino bone a little while back and I became enamored with it at that point. I really like those two cabs...but that jasper piece is off the charts gorgeous! Stunning!

Nice job on the rhodonite. What mineral is the black?

Gorgeous group and “autumn leaves” is a perfect descriptor for that Stone Canyon.

Nice job on the rhodonite. What mineral is the black? The black in the Rhodonite is Manganese.

Thank you. When I bought this, the steward of the SMS was pretty sure that it was from near Parkfield, but not legimately from the Stone Canyon area. He had collected around that area and other localities himself, and was pretty sure It was from somewhere nearby. He had found similar stuff in Cayucos (about 50 miles away), indicating it was likely formed somewhere in-between. Given that Parkfield is right on top of the San Andreas fault, material like that must be everywhere, with subtle differences. A lot of brecciated material from Central CA is sold as “Stone Canyon,” a similar situation to “Morgan Hill poppy jasper.” That is why I call it “Stone Canyon-type,” just to be 100% I don’t misrepresent. I’ve seen a lot of stuff at shows being sold as something it wasn’t. SCJ, MHPJ and jade are always approached with caution. Do you know how your material was IDed? Is it a reliable source? Definitely, let’s see the cabs.

Nice job on the rhodonite. What mineral is the black? The black in the Rhodonite is Manganese. Specifically manganese oxide. The pink In Rhodonite also comes from manganese (MnSiO 3).

Gorgeous group and “autumn leaves” is a perfect descriptor for that Stone Canyon. It came from a departed Flickr friend. I have kept it in his honor, but keep it in quotes to make clear it’s a nickname.

Thanks. Welcome to the dino bone fan-club. What’s not to like? I’m obsessed with that jasper, but only bought a few slabs of it (kicking myself).

I'm still waiting on my fan-club secret decoder ring, but it must be delayed in the mail. I can definitely understand wanting to kick yourself on only a few slabs of the jasper (not advocating it, just saying I understand!). I too would be wanting as much as I could get! I just realized I could click on the picture to bring it up on flickr and it would enlarge the picture. That made it even MORE drool worthy! I'm really seeing a lot of picture jasper and now this brecciated jasper which is really piquing my interest in these materials! Not just great material, but great looking cabs as well!

stephan I don't recall who ID's these as Stone Canyon. Or even how I got them those many years ago. The slabs have been quietly residing in a box and I decided to cut a couple of cabs recently. I think I posted one previously. I agree that many similar-appearing types of jasper probably have been deposited over that general area.

Large available without taking up bandwidth here.

The red agate is beautiful. The stuff I worked is much browner.

Looks like stone canyon to my eye. I agree that most of what’s out there is a little lighter in color but this seems accurate. I’m from the central coast and a lot of collectors around here have the stuff.
