I just received a book that I got on Amazon called Creating Lapidary Art: Working With Gemstones by Olive M. Colhour. This book is based on articles that were in Lapidary Journal. It is out of print and Olive has since passed away, but what an artist she was!!
The book is sprinkled with poems and stories and inspirational pieces (she was a religious woman). It is also full of pictures and tips. Most of the art pieces are intarsia and carvings. I took pictures from the book of some of the magnificent intarsia and one of the beautiful carvings, too. I haven't read the book, but I do like to get a glimpse into other people's creative inspiration and process, so I think I will enjoy this read. The pictures are very nice, too.

Can you imagine the hours spent on just a quarter of one of those Each piece cut to size then polished set in place and ready for the next piece
I have a old lapidary journal with the complete instructions for a Native American style thunder bird turquoise in lay with a total of 3 different types of stone and silver I may have to dig it out and post it I have been thinking of trying to make one but that’s as far as I got

It's in the book.
Yeah, it's mind boggling the work that goes into these.

This is nothing like those but equally impressive and just as time consuming right up there with working with fire agates, one of 3 projects I would like to do one day. I also have gem and lapidary materials by June Zeitner also out of print, gem cutting manual by John Sinkankas both of these books have some really nice pieces from days gone by. Besides tips and tricks for working with many different materials instructions for some pieces.

OK, That is not the one I was thinking of, but WOW! That is sweet!
I hope you do get around to doing some big projects, I'd like to see them. I'm waiting for more room to tackle anything big. We're looking for a bigger place. Both DH's and my hobbies have taken over. LOL!
Yeah, those old sources are nice. I especially enjoy seeing the material people had to work with that you just don't see anymore.

In John Sankankas book he lays out the steps to make a simple ring with core bits But when I get to it I am going to step it up a notch or two with a thicker slab that can be drilled out and a cool carving for the stone

I am working on a very similar intarsia piece currently. Hope to be done in ~3 months, it will take at least 500 hours more. I spent a long time designing and custom building a machine with a bunch of jigs to make this type of work easier to do. Dreamrocks, if you have any more old lapidary journal articles on similar topics your willing to share I would love to see them. That article was very interesting.

carver If I have any more I will. You do know finding those old lapidary journals with complete instructions is very hard to find at least ones that are complete and not water damaged. I am always keeping my eye out for them because I like the information in them. The new lapidary journal artist I had that subscription for 1 year and was nowhere as good as the original.

Interweave sells a lot of back issues. You can get digital issues cheaper. I picked up a bunch. They go on sale sometimes, too. I also picked up a bunch from Quailriver. Those'll keep me busy.

I know by the time I saw the add you had said you received them All I could say was dam it I missed them I would have bought both lots as well
I have a mineral club member that his parents use to subscribe to lapidary journal and has I don’t know how many boxes of them I am waiting for him to dig them out and work then we can out a price from there
He claims they are in excellent to great condition and had been sitting in boxes just collecting dust this is why I haven’t gone out of my way to search for them I may get a great deal on them I haven’t seen them yet waiting though
