Carved out some time to finish this one up today. Not really a cabochon as it's kind of big at 3" tall, but if you were Andre the Giant...
I knew this one was special right out of the ground. It has a small impact fracture, and then a hairline fracture nearby, but I didn't have it in me to carve this one up so I just stabilized the fracture and kept it as one piece. My favorite from a summer dig, so far anyway, thanks for looking!

Love the fire in this one! Prettiest cab I've seen in a long time! Glass Buttes? Nice job on the cab too.

jasperfanatic I have never cut fire obsidian, but I do have a few pieces I would like to try to cut. Would you be kind enough to share your process for cutting it? Your cabs always come out to amazing!
Thank you!

Thank you! Each one seems like it's own little challenge because the magnetite layers are stacked on top of each other or have a mind of their own, but when they aren't a complete Rubik's Cube my general approach is below. I like to cut them right on top of the fire layer, ultra-low dome to darn near flat with about 1-2mm of glass left on top of the magnetite layer. Those layers are rarely completely flat though, and sometimes there are valleys/dips in there which will often leave a little thicker layer of glass over that portion, which changes the light play in that area. The piece in this thread is a good example, as I chase the color with the light you can kind of see a dark bar on the right, requiring a different angle to light that spot up. It can create some cool effects, but can also be frustrating at times. This piece was a bit all over the place and slightly concave overall, so I took extra off over those spots to let more light in. It's subtle, but if you look across the top at an angle you can see the surface is a bit uneven. I personally like to keep the cab all fire, so I just clean up the edges but I've seen some really cool cabs where they've incorporated some of the glass. Other than that I run it through the soft wheels 280/600/1200/3000 and then finish it up with super cerium oxide on a felt wheel. I'm no expert but I'm happy to help anyway I can so feel free to hit me up here or in a PM if there's anything I can do to help.
