Now before any posts replies talking about hens and roosters or sunny side up or scrambled, I'm talking about polished stone eggs. I know there are sphere machines for making spheres. Are the egg machines for making eggs (other than the aforementioned hens and roosters) or are they shaped freehand?

I had a friend who made beautiful gem egg shapes. He did them freehand, using templates to get the profile right. I think starting from drilled cores as suggested would be a good way to start.

I remember seeing this in an ancient Lapidary book, not sure which book though, it was half a century ago. Apparently the setup consisted of two large diameter plates with a matching groove in each plate, one rotated, the other was stationary. The idea was that this would produce eggs because of the different radius at either end of the rock in the groove. I never tried it and I don't know anyone that has, bead machines were a similar setup and I was dubious that you would actually get an egg.

My wife collected eggs and spheres. These are the smaller ones.
