so I was looking for some new material I hadn't worked with before and came across a faced rock that came in a random box of rocks off ebay. I hadn't bothered to cut it before because it didnt seem worth the trouble. but decided I'd cut a quick slab off of it anyways. now I dont know squat about orienting a rock for the best cuts so if I have a rock already faced I normally dont think twice about it and just keep cutting from that face. right before I started cutting I decided to take a cut perpendicular to the faced side. I was pleasantly surprised with how different the cut was. this is the faced side of rock as it came to me. the picture makes it look better than it is. the stringy tube looking things have a dirty manilla color to it and agate is an off white color. this is the perpendicular cut. crazy how much the orientation can affect the look of the stone. this is the endcut and both sides of first slice. was a nice surprise. if anybody knows what this material is I'd love to know!

Can't help you with an ID, but it is absolutely amazing the difference orientation makes. Sometimes Vince will take a slab off a piece of rough both ways so we can decide which way is the most interesting.

Yeah, an ID would be nice...just hurry up and cab it already! lol, I got one in the works atm. should be finished up soon. I work cabs in groups for first 3 wheels and then individually after that. and what originally started as groups of 3-4 cabs has now grown to groups of 8-10+ cabs lol.

Wow! Lesson learned! Turn 90 degrees before giving up.

It's a Gnarly agate. I've seen those before.

The change in angle made all the difference in the world on that stone. It's handsome! Now I'm going to have to rifle theough my box of specimens and look at them on differents sides from what I faced.
