"Libyan" (Egyptian) glass has long been known
A piece was even carved into a scarab for old King Tut.
Slowly information leaked out as to where it came from.
Finally the world learned when (30 million years ago) and where it was formed -Ejected from the Kebira Crarer.
What no one knew or paid any attention to was that the impact had also forced water out of the underlying desert sand, osculating back and forth with each shock wave, iron precipitated on the walls of the discharge passageways, and created millions of pipes around the passageways.
Limonite dried out and converted to black goethite.
