I will definitely pass that on to my wife. She'll be happy to hear that.

These are great! I like how understated and detailed these are. Sure look like they'd be tricky to find.
I really appreciate seeing them rough too, I love learning what to look out for.

It can get very disgruntling, disheartening, frustrating, demoralizing...and a lot of other "ing" words - when you don't find anything! LOL Sometimes it's trying to cover as much ground as you can and look for any that are facing up...other times, it's a lot of time spent on hands and knees turning over every rock that looks like it could host a Fairburn because the banding could just be on the one side facing down! I was out a lot...and I mean A LOT this summer looking for these critters! miket has had a lot better luck than me this summer...but if he looks in his rearview mirror, I'm about to put it in high gear! LOL

Ha! I'd never really thought about it but I guess I can be grateful that Lakers are at least a little distinguishable in the rough.
These seem more like an expert-level find... but so satisfying to find, I bet!

LOL But as my father used to tell me all the time "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then!"

This one was really weird with the geometrically shaped spiral leading into the banding. I've never seen anything like this one. I've sort of been looking for type of shell, as time allows. Have not come up with it yet.
Assuming this was found up in your neck of the woods? Here's a few fossilized shells found in the Cali desert. You can see how the shells have structure, and thickness. Upper center and upper left are actually "casts."
These are some thinner walled shells locked in agate from the palm bog area off of Indian Pass Road, fifty miles up Ogilby Rd, north of I-8 in SE Cali.
You can see how varied the shape can be, depending on where it cuts through.
I probably have a better chance of IDing these little gastropod snails, then the partial one in your rock, lol.

Thanks for posting this...and for taking the time to research it! Yes, it was found at Railroad Buttes, (south of Farmingdale, SD) which is part of the Buffalo National Grasslands. To me, the shell in my rock looks most similar to the most pronounced shell in your second picture...it's just under center, right in the middle. This has some of the smallest banding out of any I've found, but I think it's one of the coolest with the banding being right in the center of the shell!
