Today I was the windshield. My wife hasn't wanted to go rockhounding much this summer, so I've been going out lately by myself, mostly down to Fairburn since she doesn't like going there. Last night she expressed some interest in going out today, so I said I'd go to Railroad Buttes if she wanted to go out. I've had tons of luck finding prairie agates out there, but no real luck finding Fairburn Agates, so I've stayed away. We had some decent snowfall within the last few weeks, and it was pretty evident there had been some erosion out there since I'd been there around two months ago. We got back to our usual spot...a spot that just kept calling me and telling me there were Fairburns back there. My wife found a chip of one earlier this year, but never any other indication other than what my gut was telling me. She acquiesced to the direction I wanted to head...ten minutes into the day I found my first Fairburn. I walked over to show my wife and then headed back to where I left my backpack. Before I got back to it, I found the second one of the day. We couldn't believe it. Finding two Fairburns within five minutes of each other and within 30 feet of each other! I found a total of six Fairburns today. A couple are really nice, and the others...well, I get to call them Fairburns. LOL My wife was happy for me...but disappointed she was skunked with the exception of finding an amazing bubble gum agate. These aren't in order of the find... they're "smallest" to "largest". Some of the smaller banded ones were really hard to get pics of the banding... In this first one, the banding is just inside that pocket and I had a hard time getting the camera at the right angle to get a pic of it.

Another - the banding was only in that pocket.

They are all pretty cool, Jason!
This one ...
... looks like a shell caught halfway between worlds.

I'm pretty sure that is a shell. Can't tell you the kind right now, but I'll take a look.
A while back, I had an interesting rock with a strange pattern on the outside. I took a best guess on where to hit it, and it split just about perfectly in half.
This is a different type of shell than yours. This is a fossilized moon snail of some type, it has pretty thick walls.
Your shell has much thinner walls, like a bubble snail? I'll see if I can find a match.

jasoninsd WOOT! What a great day to find Fairburns.
And I learned something today -- Not all snails are created equal!

It was a wonderful day! Nice link! I could have been singing her song "I Feel Lucky" today too! LOL Nice, nice, and nice, looks like a good trip. It was such a fun day today. I haven't been out there in a few months, and it's only a 30 minute drive from my house! (Of course Fairburn is only about 45 minutes!)

Nice finds. Glad you and your wife were able to get out and find some cool rocks. Do you have a photo of the bubblegum? I knew I should've posted the pics last night! She is really proud of this find...and rightly so. It's a decent size and looks beautiful. IMHO. She doesn't want it tumbled...just left as is...

What a great day for rock hunting and gut feelings- they never steer you wrong. Thanks Tela! It was perfect weather yesterday. It was 72 degrees and very little wind. Whoot Whoot! Too many times I haven't trusted my gut over the years and paid a heavy price in not doing so!
