Awhile back I wanted to know if a rock out of my landscaping rock was a Fairburn, so I cut it in half with the tile saw. It wasn't a Fairburn. LOL So, I wanted to see if I could cut a slab with the piece. It wasn't exactly even as I just did it by hand and no guide. I need to rig something up for that here shortly. I have no clue what this material is. I figured I could use the practice for this month's contest, so I cabbed this. I used a template/stencil for the shape, so it's not freeform. I didn't get the edges parallel at first, so I used my bench sander to square those up. I still can't get a high polish with just using the dremel. This was shaped with the belt sander for the straight edges and the dremel for everything else. I'll toss it in the vibe when I get the next batch going... I forgot to take pics of the slab, so the first pics are of the end cut... adjacent to the piece I used.

Thanks mohs! I really liked this shape and thought I'd give it a try. I thought the oval was easier than this shape which has multiple angles into the dome.

Wow man. That’s super nice. Thanks! I still wish I could figure out how to get a high polish on these without the vibe... I forgot to put that I actually hand sanded this with 220/400/800/1000/1200/2000 grit sandpaper. I didn't want to spend the time rednecking gluing the sandpaper onto the sanding disks, so I spent the time hand sanding...I should've made the disks! LOL

I was never great with calibrated preforms even with a bit more efficient machinery
so wont pretend to understand what ya guys do with a dremel and vibe but its pretty darn amazing
like to see the process maybe some day...
the rectangular shaped stone looks a little translucent
did you hound it?

Jason, that is beautiful! Even if it isn't a Fairburn, lol.
Good job!!

Nope, no translucency. There's some real light gray area that maybe looks that way. I didn't hound it...it was in my 21 tons of river rock I purchased for landscaping...so it was a domestic "hound"! LOL

Thanks! I know...to me, everything else is second fiddle to a Fairburn! LOL

Nice job. What it took me until this year to figure out that was the technique is the same no matter the shape; work circular. I've never used a dremel and with wheels it is stone into the grinder and I imagine a dremel is grinder into the stone.

Yep, I think you did a great job, sir! 😎 Thanks Mike! You're kind of my inspiration with cabs! I knew you were doing them with a dremel, so I thought I could give it a shot! It's a fun challenge! Nice job. What it took me until this year to figure out that was the technique is the same no matter the shape; work circular. I've never used a dremel and with wheels it is stone into the grinder and I imagine a dremel is grinder into the stone. Thank you! Thanks for the tip on the circular path. For me it is dremel to stone. The main issue for me so far, has been the instability of pressure. Holding the cab in one hand and the dremel in the other, there is no constant/static pressure (e.g. a cabbing machine doesn't move), so trying to maintain constant pressure betweem the two adds a ton of variable. If I were to dop the cab, then stabilize the dop in a vice, it would probably be a lot easier...

What a cool surprise from a garden rock. Great job on that cab! Thank you so much! And to think...I only have another 1,548,000 other rocks in the landscaping around the house from which to pick one or two! LOL

Also, super glue and a 3/8 dowel makes a good dop/stick. That's all I've ever used.

Good job!! It’s a keeper! Thanks Pat! Hopefully the second of many! You did a great job with what I would consider a very challenging shape, nice work! It’s not a fairburn, but you turned that rock into a fine little gemstone. Thank you so much - that was really nice! I figure I better give other stones a time to shine rather than just being a Fairburn snob! LOL Thanks Mike! You're kind of my inspiration with cabs! I knew you were doing them with a dremel, so I thought I could give it a shot! It's a fun challenge! Thank you! Thanks for the tip on the circular path. For me it is dremel to stone. I have a 3-piece slate pool table. One of the tricks to keeping the slate from shifting is to put a piece of index card between the slates and let super glue seep into the index card. Amazing the strength achieved by doing that! I was reading on dop sticks and knew it was going to be either wax or glue. Thanks for suggesting the glue. I was leaning that way and I think I might try that on the next one. I tried using AO polish as a "paste" and used the buffing pad on the dremel to work it onto the first cab I made. I didn't think it really did much of anything...maybe I didn't use enough or didn't buff it long enough. Hmmmm.

It should only take 5 minutes even by hand to see a difference if it did indeed just need some polish.
Yeah I love the super glue, but if it's a fracture prone piece it WILL blow apart popping it off. Some/all the glue will remain on the stone, just shave it off with a razor... wearing chain mail gloves... Unless you're confident in your method.
Nothing like pressure on a razor being suddenly released into your fingers opposite the blade. Doesn't happen often, and super glue is a good fix for that too
Edit: The super glue will also tear out strands in tiger eye and chunks of softer stones. Haven't found freezing or heating or soaking to help any...

That is a beautiful cab! You did a great job! Doesn't fingernail polish remover disolve superglue still? I used to use it when I made models and accidently glued myself to the metal or plastic.
