Sometimes a Genie wheel gets used and used till it no longer works, then what? Seems like they ought to be good for something. What do you do with your worn out wheels? Thank you, rockpickerforever

Pat, I send mine to Johnson Bros. for recoating. It doesn't matter what grit they were originally - just specify the new grits you want. I've been using their recoated wheels with good results for over a year now.

I bought an extra arbor and put my really, really worn 80, 220 and 220 (soft) on it for working some softer and temperamental stones (like jade).
gemfeller, I need to do that, but just can't bite the bullet. I need a 1200 and 3000. Have you had those grits done and were they ok- no larger grit contamination?

Yes, I've done those grits and they're fine. Their process makes the wheels harder and less "springy" than Novas but I don't mind that the way I cut. It might make a difference for some people.

What does it cost for a 6" wheel to be re-coated with diamond?

I bought a "soft" wheel from the Baltic company. It didn't have much give, which wasn't so bad, really, but it was insanely loud. Are the Johnson wheels loud? I can't do that again.

They're very similar to regular Nova wheels. Not especially loud in my experience. I did buy one of their new (not recoated) 8K wheels and it's a little stiffer and louder than others I've used but not too bad. But it's hard to gauge other people's reaction.

What does it cost for a 6" wheel to be re-coated with diamond? Their current price is $24.95 per 6" wheel plus postage. You have to send them your old wheels. www.johnsonbrotherslapidary.com/ReSurfacing_Diamond_Wheels.html

Yes, I suppose it is a bit subjective, but if the JB wheel were as loud, you would know what I was talking about. It's very loud and more high pitched. Drove me nuts. I basically tossed it.

For the years I cabbed and had a job, speed was important because I had limited free time. When a wheel was still usable but not near max efficiency, I replaced it. It is easy to sell usable wheels to those who are starting out and on a budget. I do a lot of heavy lifting with my 80 grit and when the cutting slows only a little, I consider replacement. I'm impatient and like to watch the rock dissolve as long as it doesn't chip.

D'oh. Just realized this is for soft wheels. Was hoping to find my elusive "affordable" hard wheel replacement. Guess I gotta keep looking!
