Hey all
So I did my first batch in a UV10 and it came out well enough. Onto my second and I’m just wondering if someone has videos of what good vs bad looks like. I’ve seen pictures but honestly hard to judge the “action “
I’ve read all 14 pages of the vib thread for noobs. And I read all kinds of great conflicting instructions from the vendor, manufacturers, and grit makers. The common useful sentiment is “if the action slows down. Just spray some water “. For new people who never tumble I’m not sure if they realize that this advice isn’t helpful haha.
Also I’m not sold on the ceramic media. Even if I can get everything churning nicely I still see some clumps of media glued to the side in a few places.

Quick note I did see a great video of a lot o running but my UV10 just has a different action?
There is another video of the UV10 floating around that many sites point to when you are loading it which doesn’t help foe the other 2 days of action.
So take this video with no description for instance. That is a LOT of slurry. I’m not sure I’ve ever had that much. Is that day 2 or day 7 (I’m guessing way later in the process than I’ve been doing)

I actually have the book ordered based on recommendations on this site!
So that’s the video I referenced earlier that everyone points to. It covers me for the first 3 hours of tumbling but not the next 2 days because there isn’t any slurry or slurry management.
I read excerpts from the book you referenced that said I want “pancake batter” which is doable but pancake batter doesn’t usually mean very quick action and it takes almost a day to get enough slurry to evaluate it seems?

OK, so that video in the second post: That is the perfect example of how NOT to do it. Too much water, too much slurry, not enough smalls, the action is spinning, the rocks aren't grinding they are just brushing against each other. The only thing that is getting worn down is the bottom of the bowl. Here is a video for you of my UV-18 on day 2 of 500 grit (toned down the sound). The slurry is a little thin, but, it doesn't drip off my fingers so that means it sticks and is still slippery enough to keep everything moving without getting stuck.

Ok THAT video is what I was looking for!! That’s money. Video is worth a thousand “just add water to fix the action “
You’re still getting a cyclonic effect even on day 2! I need to go harvest a lot more small guys it seems!
I suspected that video I posted was a problem. Looked kinda like rock soup.

You are welcome! If you are not getting cyclonic effect at any point in any grit: something is wrong. A lot of the time I see people using strictly ceramic media as filler and they don't add enough smalls.

So I’m getting the cyclone effect but it isn’t nearly as smooth as yours!
My issue is that I don’t have a lot of interest in little pieces. I mostly care about 1 to 2 inch rocks or bigger. So I guess I’ll go scoop up every quartz I find outside in garden rocks and toss em in and just use that as more media. I do have a decent number of smalls in mine but nothing like your video! Heck I have like 3 lbs of ceramic in there too.
Really appreciate a video of what it should look like with slurry etc.

You bet! I don't like dealing with little stones either. I just buy pre-rounded quartz gravel from Petco (pictured below-20lbs for $20 as of 11/11/20). Just make sure to pick out any broken pieces and send them through one round of coarse (with other stones) before you start to use them at your first step in the vibe process. With a UV-10 one 20lb. bag should last you a long long time...
