jasoninsd The reason it's not very salvageable is the same reason I tried the goofy shape... it's really small, so by the time I shape it up, it's gong to be the size of thumbnail. Not obvious in my first photo, I suppose. That's amazing...I was thinking it was about twice the size it is. LOL

Here is my example of a freeform that had to be. Various templates just did not do justice to the patterns within the stone. It is fairly small, about 1 1/4" long.

Supports my theory that if the colors or patterns are interesting enough, the shape doesn't really even register when you look at it. Cool rock. Is it from Mexico? Morocco? The only remotely similar rocks I have seen were from those two places.

Maybe if you listen closer they will tell you. Thank you for reminding me of that. Sometimes I forget. You don't always have to listen to them. Sometimes you can determine the origin visually. This isn't always the case, but if you see it wearing a tunic, there's a possibility it's a Moroccan Agate...and if you see it leaving the house wearing a sombrero, there's a good chance it's a Mexican Agate...

jasoninsd I think that's the best way to quickly learn anything. You start by analytically copying people with more experience and skill than you. But at some point, you're going to have this awesome slab... and after shuffling through all of your stencils two or three times, you will feel frustrated because they all either cut something off that you like, or include something that you don't. At that point, you will either (A) buy more templates; or (B) take a deep breath, spread your wings, and soar into the open sky of free-form cabochons. Like this: Ha. A total fail. But I'm learning. At least I gave up while still on the hard wheels. I don’t know about that. It’s kind of cool, and I love the patterns. I bet a talented silversmith could do something amazing with that.

Another piece made from the Flor de Durazno I received from jasoninsd : DSC_0305_Flor de Durazno lace agate by Stephan T., on Flickr I ground the matrix closer this time, to avoid the punkiness, just give it some contrast. It's really just a couple of mm of pure matrix, then a mix of agate and matrix, which is much more stable. Duplicated in "From the weekend."

Another nice one Stephan!! I like how you kept the healed fracture there at the tip! I was going to cut some preforms from the Flor de Durazno today, but I'd been cutting for hours...and it hit 95 degrees...and I wimped out! LOL

I've got a couple pieces of this set aside... Edit...it's coming up more orange in this pic than it is really. It's a very light yellow in reality... Edit again...it looks fine on my PC...it looked funny on my phone.

Here's a Coyamito fortification agate cab I cut before our move to AZ a few months ago. The outline was a bit tricky but it was fun to cut. For some reason I'm always attracted to warm yellow tones in agates, and I LOVE Coyamitos!
