Hello,to all =-) I'm the new kid on the block and I've come to learn, share and advance my passion for lapidary. I'm an amateur who's been self learning for 8 months. My main interest at the momment is learning about rocks, minerals, etc that are relevant to my area. My growing addiction to Rockhounding elevated to new heights after receiving a new Fisher F70 metal detector as a gift! Lucky me. I was always outdoors photographing too...so why not learn about metal detecting, too? I did my homework knowing that geology and understanding my surroundings was imperative to the success of my hobbies.Vancouver Island is paradise for certain "goodies". I noticed that certain ocean beaches had great shoreline rock treasures. I knew I had to learn more. I was/am hooked. I'm stock piling Dallasite of amazing quality and varying sizes. Red jasper, green chert and others are sooo much fun! At this point, I'm not into tumbling. It intrigues me, tho...so does the saws, sizing, etc. For now, I'm working on identification of the treasures left behind by glaciers. I'm collecting...hours and hours of beachcombing has rewarded me with a decent amount of beautiful goodies. I hope to share my finds here and greatly welcome any input. I feel that I can provide some good quality material for folks who enjoy tumbling, crafts and jewelry making. I will learn from others, here,as well. Thank you for providing this cool website. I've already read some posts and am learning more. Much appreciated =-)

Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! Be careful, my interest started with hounding...and now I have a rotary tumbler, a vibratory tumbler, and just picked up a new slant cabber! LOL ps. I have to agree with Tela, we love seeing pics of "finds"!

Some of Vancouver's rocky beaches were tantalizing. I only had a couple of days to id some of the goodies than you are focusing on. Hey if you get bored you can wander up the Frazier River and enter a new spectrum. Welcome, share your finds, and ask questions!

Thank you very much for the input and welcomes. I'm figuring out how to reply individually to folks on this thread? After 5 hours of steady rain and wind, I managed 10 more lbs of what I feel is nice Dallasite, yesterday. People in their beautiful seaside homes were keeping an eye on me wondering,I'm certain, if I was going to get swept away 😅 I'm thinking of purchasing those suspender type water pants...waders?.. My newbiness is hopefully amusing 😅 I have a wet suit but it's a pain to work with cold. I need to be able to go up to my thighs in sea water.Rubber boots didn't cut it yesterday, allowing wave splash in. It didn't deter me, I'm addicted and got great photos. I rested my eyes every hour, too. I was tossing away Dallasite, I would of kept in Victoria,B.C. The waves kept churning up Dallasite I couldn't reach. Too deep. Oddly, there was 80% less red Jasper then the day before? A resident told me, I'm the only crazy lass Rockhounder at this remote beach that he's seen in 10 yrs! All I wanted to know is: are there Rogue waves here, sir? The answer: no. Off I went into the waves. Yes. Thank you for the interest. I will most certainly give a looky at the goodies in a few days. I have 6 more days to Rockhound and I'll be blessed with several daytime low tides with minimal rain but colder temps. If I could get some waders 😅 I'd be even more set.Tumbling, polishing and the finer aspects will wait.I'm all about stockpiling for now. I'm learning about American coastal goodies, too. 🇺🇸🇨🇦✌ Thanks, again. Have fun. Stay safe

Hello again✌ hope everyone is well. Enjoying the last 4 days in Qualicum Bay, Canada...Rockhounding, of course😁🌊🌊🌊 So far, I've managed 15 lbs of beautiful Dallasite and about 3 lbs of Red Jasper. The ocean has left them clean since it wasn't in a lagoon. I've come across some petosky stones too. One glorious flower stone (christhamimum). I promise to photograph my finds in a week or so. I'm focused on utilizing every minute of Rockhounding in our short daylight days. I've been studying rock and minerals around the areas that folks chimed from: Arizona Virginia Washington to name a few. I feel it's important as a newbie to understand the geology, history and other factors that provide us with beautiful goodies. For now, I'm obsessed with Dallasite ( obviously)and have taken the time to keep only the finest specimens. Chest waders are on order🤩

Can you post some photos of your Dallasite finds? You could post them in the General Rocks Board.

Dallasite does work up beautifully. I made a few cabs after my last trip to your area. Talking about waders prompts a word of caution. People drown in them when the fill with water and you can't stand up. Safety first, and foremost.

Welcome from the Desert Southwest!
What a neat first post with a great little story. Having been to Vancouver Island and other parts of the B.C. area and not known that there were any rocks there, you have reminded me once again that I have probably stepped on many precious gemstones over the years and never even known it.
I am really curious to see what could be found in your neck of the woods though, so if you ever have a chance, please post some pics!

Hello and many thanks for the most recent welcomes and input. Yes, I shall be super careful with waders along ocean shoreline. Fantastic information...as in big thanks💐 my only other option is a full wetsuit. It's worth the hassle because I can really play. I can imagine it will look snazzy with gum boots😅 Dallasite is soaking...looking pretty. Thanks again. I look forward to sharing my finds and looking at others👍 The areas where folks are chiming in from are so interesting. Visually and from a geology point of view, too. South Dakota, too! Here, being surrounded by ocean is interesting, plus, we have great rivers and lakes. There was much glacial activity here. I have photos from Victoria, B.C. where ocean side bedrock is scraped and gouged by slow moving glaciers. It's really awesome to see in real life🤩

P.S. I've been reading a lot about "dry" mining. Mostly for gold in USA desserts and other areas. I'm about to read mineral, rock, etc information soon, too. My next trip will be to Kamloops B.C. and other gem producing areas there. I've reached my 40lb quota of Dallasite and red Jasper..✌🇨🇦

I was in Victoria with Pioneer Pauly two summers ago. There are nice rocks on the beaches, but also keep your eyes open for arrow heads. When I was messing around with clams (squirting), Pauly found a beautiful arrow head. You got a good metal detector and should have lots of fun with it. You will enjoy Kamloops. There is good collecting. Gold, agate, etc. Wish I was there. Hello from Ontario
