I have ordered a Lortone 3lb tumbler! I found this beautiful piece of petrified wood. would it work well in the tumbler? I have several similar, yet smaller pieces.

In my opinion no. It looks highly fractured and crumbly. I have tried many pieces that looked like this in the beginning. MAYBE 1-5% ended up with anything worth keeping so these days I would consider that a discard rock.

I'd toss it in there. Only one way to learn, correct? Give it a try, I would. I've tumbled uglier stuff than that especially starting out. Sometimes they'll surprise you, sometimes you get colorful driveway gravel.

I don't have the experience to say yay or nay on the pet wood...but CONGRATULATIONS on your first of MANY purchases to try and satisfy (to no avail) your newly found addiction!

Thanks again! Just so you know, this and all the rocks I am posting are ones I have found in my back yard!

Congrats on the tumbler chandler ! You're going to have so much fun with it. I've tumbled some gnarly looking agates and petrified wood. The rough stage will knock off the sharp bits. Internal cracks and such will probably remain though. If you have access to the wood, it'll be great practice. You might have to cut or break up that piece though. It's a bit large for the 3a barrel. Remember it doesn't have to perfect. So dive in and have some fun. You can always go back and re-tumble it later if you want to.

I'd see if you can trim off the areas with more fractured spots and give it a go. Worst case scenario, you lose a chunk of pet wood.
