Got some photos of some of the stuff we picked up in the Black Hills area. I didn't get a shot of the landscape, but the areas looked much like NMRocks' fire agate site, maybe possibly even more barren, and well over 100 when we were there. We have a lot of stuff. Later at The Rock Shed, Shawn helped us out with ID. First are group shots. Agate & Jasper including bubblegum and prairie agates. Lots of wood. Next is the most amazing piece of pet wood I've ever picked up. Shawn says that there used to be tons of this stuff, this one used to be a small piece. Hey, I'll take it! Last are 2 views of my Fairburn Agate find. Shawn and the woman who works for him, who is a local expert, both said yes it was a Fairburn, being defined by the pattern you can see on the surface (doesn't have to be all over the rock). This is not a Fairburn that will make me rich or anything, but it's the real deal. Shawn's employee said she wouldn't be able to resist cutting into it, sometimes you find more underneath. I forgot the size ref, it's about the size of a medium chicken's egg. Thank you for looking!

Thanks! That pet wood knocked my sox off. If I hadn't been in the middle of some desert sand dunes in 107 degree heat at about 6000 feet or so and hands and feet full of cactus needles, I'd have walked all the way back to the car to show it off. As it was, I learned some important lessons about dehydration and the adverse effects of heat on this trip!

Boy Puppie, you got some awesome stuff there. That Fairburn agate is super, what a great find, those things are scarce for sure. The pet wood is beautiful, another great find. What a great trip it turned out to be for you, lots of fantastic rocks, still love the green one best.

That is a great haul. They are going to be great tumbled. I have a feeling that Fairburn agate has some surprises in it. Tami

Cher, Tami, Stefan, I'm really excited about the Fairburn. Certainly I never expected to find one and wasn't specifically looking for them, there was agate everyplace you looked, it was like the candy store only very spartan amenities! Plus I know how it is with tourists, everybody bragging about the 25 fairburns (or whatever) that they found, yada, yada, yada. But this one was distinctive enough that I ID'ed it in the field, as they say, and held it out from the others to show to Shawn when we got there. I don't know anything about cutting rocks and even if I had the equipment I wouldn't know what direction to saw. A friend of mine's aging dad used to be a rocker like us, and she was kind of excited thinking maybe she could get him interested in cutting it for me. The ones in the picture were only a small sampling of what I picked up. I just took 4 SD rocks out of 60/90 -- I was very conservative and put the rest back -- one of the four already screams pendant. I should run downstairs and try to get a shot of them. Thanks!

Aren't they amazing after only a week. The thing is, I tossed back a lot of stuff that was nearly this good, which is amazing. Wow! The black striped one, the shape and all of it, is just perfect. It's gotta be a pendant.

Nice rocks Pup...the wood is amazing but that Fairburn is a real prize...would love to find that sometime. Csroc It's funny about that rock. Like I said the pattern was noticeable enough that I picked it up in the field. Yet the pattern is just a minute part of the surface and the rock otherwise just looks like an old potato. The pattern really pops out under magnification. All I know is, if I could manage to find one with as little as I know about either rockhounding or Fairburns, not to mention so little time spent on it, anybody can!
