I've never used online forums, so hopefully I am doing this right! I received my first tumbler this past Mother's Day and it has grown into a somewhat ridiculous obsession, lol. So many tumblers! bahaha! I'm in Utah, so the self collected materials are piling up in the garage. But it has been so much fun exploring new places to pick up pretties to tumble. I stumbled upon this forum researching the differences in grit. There is so much amazing info here! I can't wait to learn from everyone! And I was super excited to find posts from Krystee. Someone shared her obsidian recipe with me and I am currently at step 2 (220 in vibe). I've done alright with Obsidian in the past, but haven't managed to perfect it. Hoping things turn out this time around. Anyway, I look forward to really figuring this out, and getting to know everyone!

Welcome from the Desert Southwest, mindisue! Hey, those are some real eye catchers in your Avatar photo. I can imagine bowls upon bowls of polished stones placed throughout your home! The picture you posted above came out great. You got the hang of it. Most new folks have trouble with photos. If your stones in the photo above have just come out of Stage 1, then you are in for some of the most spectacular tumbles of your life when they are finished. But if they are softer stones, then you fill find a good deal of difficulty getting a shine on them. Soft ones give almost all of us trouble. Beautiful rocks though!

Those stones are finished, and I didn't expect more than a nice satin finish. I tend to collect a lot of things like that, lol. Those and my Vernon Wonderstone are some of my favorites. So soft and buttery! I've recently picked up a couple of vibratory tumblers, and am interested to see how they do in those. I also collect a lot of banded calcite that tumbles quite nicely, but again never achieves a super polish. But I just picked up some muriatic acid and am going to have fun giving that a go!

Interesting Sue. I've not even heard of using Muriatic Acid for any sorts of polishing. I can't imagine how it would be used. I guess there is no end to learning. You are ahead of me in the tumbling hobby for sure. I wish you the best of luck using it! Thank you for mentioning.

Most of the big hunks of massive, non crystalline Calcite you see at Shows has been treated in Muratic, even thought some Vendors will deny it. WARNING!! Muratic and Calcite create really nasty toxic fumes, so be very careful while using it. Should be outdoors with a covered container, and be sure to be down-wind when opening container. Thick rubber gloves are also a good idea. Be careful!!

Calcite (CaCO3) and Muratic (HCl) => CaCl + H20 + CO2 Ideally. there is always Cl2 that escapes which is corrosive and can burn lungs. Use outside only.
