I meant to post a pic of the area I was hounding today...a lot of the riverside was covered with this kind of overgrowth. On the way out this morning, we passed a field that had over 200 antelope in the field. Neither my father-in-law nor I had ever seen that many antelope hanging out together in one place...no pic for that. Sorry. And I had three bald eagles circling overhead for quite awhile. Two adults and one juvenile. I got a pic of one adult in flight...not as good as the pics EricD gets...but still a snapshot.

jasoninsd those Eagles were just waiting for you to drop that Fairburn so they could swoop in and snatch it! LOL That's a beautiful rock that you found. The banding on it is superb. I agree with stephen I'm starting to get a bug for the rocks of South Dakota too. Thanks for the great pictures. I see what you mean by the Petrified Wood piece. It is a beautiful specimen. I have a couple that are that way that I won't touch either. One of them is a small piece that was entirely replaced with calcite. It's almost clear weird huh? I too am hoping to find a whole ammonite someday. So far I've only found pieces. All these great field trips you've been making... I'm feeling the urge to make the pilgrimage back up to the Sulphur River again

I'm feeling the urge to make the pilgrimage back up to the Sulphur River again Thank you so much! First, I'm paranoid anytime a bird flies overhead of me...I always think they're going to poop on me! LOL - I panic during the Canadian Geese migration twice a year! Secondly, I didn't trust they weren't trying to steal my Fairburn, so I was watching them like a hawk! Anytime you wanna head on up here to go hounding for SD rocks, you've got an open offer for me to be a sidekick! I just love that one particular pet wood piece. It just "looks" like wood! LOL Heck, play hookie and take a trip up to Sulphur River...YOLO! Nice one, jasoninsd ! You've definitely got the eye for finding Fairburns- of course you've got me rooting for you every time you go out! Thanks Mike! Every time I know you're going out, I've got my fingers crossed and I'm waiting and anticipating the post of your finds! Like kyoti just talked about, every time you post one of your beauties, I just can't wait to get back out there to try and find one...not in a competition kind of way...only in a "I'm totally addicted to the feeling of finding a Fairburn and want to feel that again" kind of way... LOL

I know exactly what you mean. Not the competition. It's the journey, not the destination. The thrill of the hunt. I don't even know if Fairburns are the best rocks- but they're the best I can find! 😁

[quote author=" jasoninsd" source="/post/1138331/thread" timestamp="1607480647" Wow, awesome finds jasoninsd . I never found a full ammonite when I was collecting fossils but did see some pieces of them along with the remnants of the outer layers. Where I collected as in Montana outside of Glendive. It was a cool area but it had rained the day before so I was ankle deep in mud most of the time. I even lost a boot in the mud and had to pry it out with my rock hammer. Great job on finding some really good rocks and fossils. Thanks Diane! I'd love to find a FULL ammonite! That would be the bomb! I'm not so sure that one in the orange colored rock isn't a full one though...albeit it a small one. It might not be one, but it sure appears to be the same shape and design as the others. I know for sure the larger ones are. OMG! Were you dealing with the same type of "gumbo" we have down here?!? If the ground out in this area gets wet, it's slick to point of ice...and can sink a vehicle to the hubcaps in a heartbeat! You need to tie your boots! LOL [/quote] Yes, the mud near Glendive is basically the same type of "gumbo" you have. It gets wet and is a slick as snot and when it gets really wet it turns to almost quicksand in consistency. LOL, I did have them tied but the mud sucked it right off my foot. I'm lucky it didn't swallow me whole...LOL.

drocknut - Diane, I'm not sure if you're aware of it or not, but apparently Glendive has security cameras setup in place. You probably didn't even know they caught your quicksand incident on camera...here's the proof!

Oh my! That's some serious quicksand. Lol I saw this gif and thought of you Jason and Mike... You'll really have to keep an eye on those birds now! Thanks a ton for the offer to rockhound in South Dakota! I'll have to make my way up there once the glaciers and polar bears return to Canada for the summer 😆 Seriously though Thanks a ton. For offering. It is super nice of you to offer. If you guys are ever down in the Dallas area just give a shout and I'll show you some cool spots to go hounding. I never did make it to the Sulphur River the other day. I got called into work .Bummerland! The river supposed to be dammed up sometime in the next year. So if you're down here before then I'll show you where to collect fossils and petrified wood.

kyoti - That's exactly how I feel about birds! LOL I would have to say, this is not the "best" time of year to be out hounding in this area...but we're taking advantage of the warmest Fall we've had in awhile. Temps are supposed to stay low for at least the next couple weeks (30s and 40s)...so it'll be stocking caps and fingerless gloves when going out hounding for a spell. I'd love to make my down to the Dallas area...both for hounding, and the food! LOL If you're going to keep putting work ahead of hounding (I'm not saying it was a wrong decision LOL), you're not going to get much hounding done before the dam the river...and you're going to need to invest in some scuba gear!

Ooo great idea! Underwater rockhounding! Jacque Cousteau was my childhood hero It's supposed to be chilly and rainy here next week too. I'm going to have to buy myself some duck boots or galoshes so I can slosh through the rivers and creeks for rocks. I normally wear sandals but 30 or 40 degrees is a bit chilly for that.

Holy smokes, those are "our" temps up here! I can't wear sandals out hounding...too much prairie cactus! I've got duck boots and hip waders for the creeks/rivers though. Yep! Childhood "heroes" were Cousteau and Marlin Perkins from Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom!

I remember the Wild Kingdom. My family and I used to love that show. I always wanted to travel to Africa to see all those cool animals.

You know, Jason, that I am not kidding when I tell you that I opened up the Google MAP to see how far SD was from Vegas after I saw these pictures! One day I hope. Until then I can just enjoy the pics that you post! Thanks for sharing!

When the time is right in life for you to make the trip up here, you have a standing offer for me to show you around. I won't guarantee finding anything of merit mind you (as it's completely hit or miss for me! LOL), but I can definitely add some comic relief if nothing else!

Here's another beast I found while out hounding last week. Before anyone says anything, I know it's not a fossil! LOL This looks (to my very untrained eye!) like it has pockets of chalcedony throughout the rock. The only reason I picked it up was because it reminded me of NevadaBill 's thread on stromatolites...and no, I don't think it's that either. I don't usually...okay ever...see rocks like this, so of course I had to adopt it! There's no uniformity to it and it's not like any conglomerate I've seen out here. The different "sections" aren't linear per se. They're bent and twisted. It's dimensions of "the beast" are 10"x4"x3". Just thought it was very interesting and very different from the norm I run across...

Jason, I have no idea what that rock is, but to me just the shape resembles a pile of poop.
It's a very nice looking pile of poop, though.

It's a very nice looking pile of poop, though. Just for the record...it's not "fresh"! LOL I got it wet in the sink prior to the photo shoot. I won't argue your visual impression...although it doesn't really look like any coprolite I've ever seen pics of! RWA3006 - can you confirm this isn't poop?
