I mentioned before I had been given permission to hound on some private property along the Cheyenne River where the river had been diverted. My father-in-law and I had gone out to the property weeks ago and thought we knew where the river had been diverted...but I went out by myself today and found where it had been majorly diverted! Tons of exposed river rock...a hounders paradise! I'm going to post pictures tomorrow of the 4-5 gallons of petrified wood I found. Sometimes I have trouble identifying the pet wood from this area, but not with these...they look like wood! LOL Tomorrow I will also post pics of the fossilized clams clusters I found...they're absolutely amazing to me! I want to wait until it's light out to take pics of those things. However...I am going to post pictures of the FOUR Fairburn Agates I found today!!! One is almost a Ghost Fairburn. Another one is the most vibrant one I've found. Then, there are two that are almost the size of softballs!!! The two biggest ones have very minute banding, which makes me wonder what's on the inside! Now I'm in the same predicament miket was just in...and his cut Fairburn turned out amazing! I'll take some more pics in my lightbox of some of these tomorrow, but I'll post the pics I took for now.

Woot! 4 Fairburns. Way to go, Jason! That last one is splendid.
It's going to take you the rest of your life to hound that area.

Nice rocks, my friend! I really like that last one... I know right!?! I like them all...but that one was definitely the favorite for the day! I can't believe I'm about to type this...I'm thinking the two big ones need to be cut...and the "almost" ghost may need to get tumbled. (GASP ) Woot! 4 Fairburns. Way to go, Jason! That last one is splendid.
It's going to take you the rest of your life to hound that area. Thanks Robin! My wife...who has said she never really wants to ever go down to Fairburn to hound, saw the pics of the river bank and started whining about (I mean mentioned) wanting to go! I only took those two pics...there's so many acres of land where the river used to run. I'll have to let my wife know I need to put in the hounding "overtime" in order to get this area properly searched! LOL

Holy smokes. Some very nice finds. Those are spectacular, especially the last two. Envious of your day out.

Great stuff, think about the compromise of facing some of those finds. 80% of the rock is natural and the most beautiful pattern is shown to its maximum. Nice work man. You rock.

Not just for the four Fairburns, but just an enjoyable day all around. I was just as excited finding the fossilized clam shells as I was the Fairburns...well, almost! And I couldn't believe all the petrified wood pieces I found. I'll post pics of those later today. A whole bunch of good looking Fairburns, dang. Thanks Norman! My father-in-law has gotten me access to a ton of places since you've been up here. Next time you come up, I've got a couple other places to possibly show you.

Funny you should say that. I'm going down to my father-in-law's to help him out today and I'm taking the two large ones with me. After helping him, we might run up to Keystone to the rock Shed and see if Shawn has recommendations in which direction to cut them...and might beg him to possibly slice them as I know he has a slab saw big enough, which I don't...

One thing to pay attention to, if you plan to slab/cab/polish is that the yellow portion seems softer (or maybe crumbly — it looks possibly druzy) than the fortifications and the eyes. It seems to have undercut on its river-tumbling journey. I imagine the same could happen with tumbling. Hand polishing might give you a bit more control.

That particular one is the type I feel should be left in its natural "find" state. I'll give it a soak in Lime Away for a couple days, but no grinding or polishing...
