Never really thought too much about tumbling petwood before.. but after all the petwood pics of late, and having a ton of it just laying around here, i think I'm getting the bug... besides, it's the only other thing i've found around here besides quartz that takes a polish. Here's a few i found on the side of the driveway: Ahh.. what is this... Look like petwood... WHACK!! (28oz hammer).. splinters like petwood. Another one... and the back side.. Here they are wet... Walked down to the gravel pit and came back with these... Mostly browns greys and shades of white, but did see touches of blues and reds here and there Man, I reeaaaally need to get another tumbler. ;D ;D Thanks for looking Jimmy

Wow, you find those in your yard? No fair, I want a new yard. If you don't have enough tumbler space you can always consider the "networked tumbler" concept. This is where you send ten lbs. of rock to each member to tumble... Joe

This gives whole new meaning to driveway gravel. Alaska is the largest state in the union, after all. Seriously, that is some beautiful rock. Seeing that and the other neat stuff you've been picking up makes me wonder just how big a pile of rocks have you got?

Hi Beeper , I hate to be the bearer of bad news , but I have a feeling that your " Petwood" might turn out to be a rock called " Schist". It looks so very much like the rocks we find here in the South Island of New Zealand. Some will tumble OK and others won't. It flakes a lot which is so typical of schist. It is a metamorphic rock and filled with layers of quartz, which could contain gold.
Jack PS it might pay to pan the slurry after tumbling, for gold.

hopefully not, but probably so... There is lots of that layered schist type rock around here.. and I do see pieces that have been naturally smoothed and rounded that look very similar to this, but i thought it seemed to be lighter, and easier to break/crumble with a scatering of mica throughout. -don't tumble worth beans. speaking of layered quartz, i was at a river a couple weeks ago and seen up to one inch layers of quartz running through layers of what i believed to be a wall of schist or some slate type material. unfortunately i left the camera in the car. I did dig out a few pieces of quartz though.. heh oh well, i'll start a batch of this stuff on monday and see what happens thanks, jimmy

Jimmy, did any of it look like it had rings in it? Hard to believe that isn't pet wood, it looks so much like it.
